ICG SLABS Reslabbed to PCGS?

Has anyone reslabbed ICG Certified coins to PCGS certified coins. Also, What about any reputation comment? The reason I ask is i haave a good opportunity to buy a ICG coin and would like down the road to reslab or keep it the same.

I've had mixed experiences with them- mostly good. The 3 or 4 coins that I've cracked out of ICG holders and reslabbed at PCGS got the same grade or 1 notch higher. BUT- I did crack a gorgeous BU '43-S DDO cent only to find that it had very light hairlines (not die scratches) that would have kept it from grading at PCGS. I couldn't see the hairlines when the coin was in the holder and was very lucky to have gotten the coin from a customer that I do a lot of business with, he accepted it's return without any problems.

So you think you have a better chance to get the same grade if you crack them out yourself or have them do it?. Do you think it might influence their grade a little? I always looked at an ICG coin as a point or 2 below what they grade it at. Not in all cases but most of them

Jason- I'd never send a coin into another TPG to have them crack and regrade it! I think it'd definitely influence the outcome. Regardless of what anyone says, there's plenty of ego involved and I would have a hard time believing that PCGS would knowingly give a coin a better grade than what their competitors do.

To answer your question Roger- GRADING IS SUBJECTIVE!!! There are coins in EVERY company's holder that would grade better and worse at their competitor. Not to sound all "cliche"- but, buy the coin not the holder. The moment you start depending on the numerical grade on the holder to determine value is the moment you lose perspective and fall victim to the slab companies. I've said before, there are plenty of people out there who simply travel the show circuit buying and reselling without a table- most of them have very keen eyes and know how to grade. Someone with enough experience can spot that MS64 Morgan that will reslab as a -65 and net them a $10K profit. Happens all the time.

ICG could be anything. I have no experience with the new ICG, but have heard they grossly overgrade. Before the that, all of the coins I have seen for a couple years were overgraded by at least 1 grade. Before 2000ish (ballpark, nothing exact), they were nearly up there. There was a time were they were quite comparable to the big boys, but I am not familiar with their slabs/timing to say just when. So saying it is an ICG slab is not particularly meaningful unless you also know the era of the slab.

I've dealt with ICG when CONECA was still using them. I don't believe they over graded coins I received in my shipments.

I've sent coins in other holder's to ANACS and have had them grade up once.- XF45 - AU53 not much but still it does somewhat matter on price. I would think they would rate it against there standards and grade accordingly. I think cracking coins out of slabs repeatedly to better the grade can cause a problem down the road for the coin. Remember that all those fingerprints cause oil on the coin and then spots or tarnish in time.

Absolutely! If you're putting your fingers all over a coin to get it out of a slab, you're doing it all wrong and have no business doing so.

Well, I just checked and according to my inventory I had one ICG coin and it crossed as a MS 65 RED at PCGS. But I think its pretty common knowledge that ICG Proofs will not even come close if crossed at any of the other TPG's.
