    1939-D RPM Unusual Tone

Was taking pictures for my web site. Anyone have any idea if this could be an unusual grease tone or post mint damage. It has little grease spots that are raised still on the effected areas. Weird to see a blue colored spotted coin. Esp on a $8 coin from a roll.

I can't really comment to the spots, but nice photos!

I agree...beautiful RPM, don't know what to say about the spots.

All these spots appear to be from something that sat on the surface of the coin and corroded some areas. What it is...I couldn't tell you, but it's damage for sure.

          Hi,

Yep, it's damage. it could be from whatever holder the coin was in. Essentially, it's early corrosion (oxidation) caused by some contaminant on the surface of the coin.

          hanks,
          Bill

Sometimes albums mess up coins. Sneezing can affect coins. Salt from fingerprints can affect coins. Saliva turns coin darker brown. (Watch a nice cent that has been in a child's mouth. They turn quick on BU coins.)

Um, I hope I'll never catch a coin in my child's mouth!

It looks even worse if you don't catch it before they swallow

With the zinc centers they can be harmful if swallowed.
