    Strange coin

    I wasn't really sure where I could put this or even if I should post it. I know it is a nickel and this is a cent forum, but I have been puzzled as to what happened to this coin. Does anybody know what this might be?

    That die deterioration. Nickels have some of the most extravagant die det. I have ever seen. That one's pretty impressive.

        I can see the die det on some areas but others appear to be DD. That was what threw me off the most.

          With something this worn, it would be almost impossible to determine if it had actual hub doubling on it. This one might even have some machine doubling on it as well, but if you can't make a determination, then it can't be listable, or even identifiable as a doubled die. That's actually too bad, because there are certainly some real nice doubled die reverses for the Jefferson Nickels.

            Thanks for the help and explanation. This would have to be the best die det example I've found for a nickel. It is actually a 1983D nickel.

              I'm not trying to be a wise guy:-) Other folks here would tell you that. BUT..I was going to identify this coin as a 1983 D but you beat me to it.

              1983 and especially 1983 D nickels have some of the worst and most distinctive die deterioration doubling that I've ever seen on nickels. You could swear that they are doubled dies but they are not.

                I have some 83's that the dies are so worn out that they are worth saving for an example or interest point. They amaze me the mint used dies long enough for them to look like this.

                          I concur, '83 Jeffersons can be wild with the die wear. Here is an example;

                              Well it looks as though I wasn't wrong in trying to post it. I've been hoping I wouldn't get scolded for posted a nickel on a Cent forum. It is always good to have learning tools. I have quite a few different coins that have some small non collectible error just for my own reference or to look at from time to time. I'm glad you guys enjoyed the coin. Sometime I'll have to post some really extreme lamination errors and struck thru errors that I've found.
