I had heard rummer that they were going yo halt the dollar coins, and this article make that sound effective as of 2012. Is there any other supporting info on that? I haven't even been keeping up with the mint release schedule for this year.
Even a fool can look wise if he keeps his mouth closed.
I heard that the mint suspended production of Presidential coins:

They should suspend the printing of dollar bills. Make $2 bills to fit into the cash drawers where the $1 used to be. Put the dollar coins where the 50 cent coins used to be and quit making the half dollars. JMOHO.

It has long been understood that it costs over a penny to make penny. The recently recommended federal budget from the White House suggests decreasing the price of pennies and nickels. Article resource: Obama calls for lower cost of making pennies and nickels. It has also been said that raw materials used is actually cheap but Mint is buying blank coins and stamp it. They are suggesting the use of steel since they have already used it before in the absence of copper.
When I visited portland, OR last year, the rails had money machines that spit out dollar coins. They may not be producing anymore for circulation but I think they will need dollar coins for a while.
BUT for all its worth they are in the BLACK every year with the money they make off of other coinage so I don't know what they are fussing about, just producing the coinage(that costs a fraction to make/is worth in real metal value) and saying its worth this much is borderline criminal. All the hubbub about them losing money is ridiculous as they MAKE more money every year than they lose
why dont they do what they do with paper. add blue and red fibers into the coins and make plastic ones. or metal with plastic cores with the fibers in it. cut down on counterfeiting. Like we are gonna fake 2012 pennies. ( as of now ).

Pennies are still around for posterity only... It cost more than they are worth... If I remember correctly the mint had to build a new wharehouse for the dollar coins because no one wanted them... Nearly 1 billion in dollar coins stored in a wharehouse!!!
Jim (A.K.A. Elmer Fudd) Be verwy verwy quiet... I'm hunting coins!!! Good Hunting!!!
