    Wheat Proofs

Whats a good source or a good way to figure out if your wheats are proofs or not?

Most proofs I see that are wheats, I would of never been able to notice!!

I have alot of wheats that look like they may be prrofs but I wouldnt know how to check!!!

    Hi Jason,

It depends on what years of wheats your talking about. I'm just getting started in looking for these also. The original proofs 1909-1916 (1917) have a matte finish that look like a satin/grainy/sandblasted look to the field. They can be tough to see sometimes. I'm not confident that I would recognize one if I held it right now. I want to go to a show or dealer and see one in person to get a good feel for it. The other proofs 1936-Now look like the proof that we all know and love. There are other details in the later ones such as the Wide-AM also.
Here's a thread that we talked about the older ones.

heritage auctions archives have to me great images that can be referenced at anytime

      bluntly though

proofs have square rims...mirrored fields and are devoid of die striation lines

telling matte proofs of 09-16 are another story as you truly need to study the diagnostics...they truly can be tough compared to unc's of that day...wide rims is a start though...but that's it a start in diagnosing one

        Jason - Teddy/ Teddy - Jason,

Teddy is who turned me onto early proofs. I crave to have them or even 1. Like he said, Heritage Auctions http://www.heritagecoins.com has some of the best pictures I've seen. I've been comparing my coins for grading and drooling at this site for years. This is the auction house I use to sell my coins also.

As for early proofs... come on lucky number 17.

        Good Luck & Happy Hunting,
        Lestrrr

P.S. Teddy, Roaring applause to you for your matte proof giveaway...and to have the winner give it to a member of the military being deployed this Sunday! I have to honestly say I was choking when I read that this morning!

For those that don't know, Teddy had a free giveaway for a matte lincoln but covered the PCGS label and coin and asked that the winner wait until Dec. 25th to open it...... It was beautiful keeping with the holiday spirit. I won't tell what it was though. You have to look for that!
