      I agree. From this far away, it looks like die deterioration. The link caption isn't kidding: "tinypic"

        I can barely see the coin much less the mint mark. My eyes are getting worse and worse.

            Simon has it mostly correct.

            It's not die deterioration - actually has nothing to do with that. This coin suffers from split plating, like a heck of a lot of the early zinc cents from Denver. It's exceedingly common. Basically the copper plating split apart exposing the zinc core, which is reactive to environmental conditions - it corrodes quickly.

              There is alot of 1983-'d's that were struck thru a bubble on the planchet. That kind of looks like it.
