I've got one just like it, same date too! I hold onto it just because it's a cool little novelty.

I have quite a few of the states. Somewhere either in the bank, or storage area, I have the complete collection on 1976 cents. They were made to commemorate the bicentennial.

Thanks for the info - I did not know about the states being part of the bi-centennial.

That's the first time I had seen and collected them Roger. It seems they are found on other dated cents as well, but I do know of many sets sold to honor the bicentennial.

I found mine framed with all fifty states. I had forgotten I had gotten it until this was mentioned. I have had it stored in a box in my closet but now I think I will hang it on my wall next to the state quarters.

                    Just want to clarify:

These have been produced by private companies since the mid-1960s. The latest dated coin I have seen with the impression of a state is 1990.

These are NOT government produced. They are counterstamps - they have nothing to do with the US Mint.

There is no numismatic value in these - they are a novelty.

Most of these coins were produced to be given away at banks or sold at truck stops as novelties.

I have a complete set dated 1974. I used to have a complete set dated 1976. I have had the opportunity to buy a complete set dated 1967 from a dealer who had them in the original display card from a bank. He wanted too much for them ($100). I have seen other complete sets (most dated 1974) available from $25-$50.

Most of the time these sell for about a dollar each.

They have NOTHING to do with the state on the coin - as if they were "issued" in that state. They were produced and sold as sets in various locations all over the country.

I don't believe it was even suggested these were made at the mint Chuck. At least I didn't see a reference to the mint making them.
The set I own says it on the placard that the coins were stamped to celebrate the bicentennial in 1976. I am sure there are a thousand reasons why they were counterstamped during other dates as well. They are definitely a novelty item. I don't think anyone disputes that.

I was only being very clear for the OP to ensure there were no loose ends. I wasn't arguing with anyone's post.

I have found only one of these in all the million or so coins I have searched, so I guess it could be a one-in-a-million find.
Still, they are kind of fun to find.. but I would not like to see one on a variety coin.
