    Shy,

I own...well let's say A LOT of coins. Only 3 are in slabs. I understand and believe all the pros about slabbed coins. I am like many who have answered this thread. I like to look at my coins, feel my coins, take them on long walks by the ocean. Uh, wait, I got distracted. Sorry. Seriously, nothing says coin collecting to me than a good ol' red box full of 2x2 flips full of neat and wonderful coins.

I like to keep the coins I find in the wild in 2x2s, but if I'm spending the money on a nice MS state coin, Id rather have it slabbed. I like the protection from bumps and nicks a slab provides. Plus when Im dead and gone at some point they will be easier to sell.

If you take your coins for long walks on a short pier...might be hard to do that

To shy and everyone else trying to figure out to slab or not to slab....
          no right or wrong answer...
just what ever you like....slabbed...unslabbed...just as long as you enjoy it all!

I think having some coins slabbed is worthwhile , especially key date coins as in a very short time ive become aware even the Lincolns are faked. It boggles the mind but it seems easy to someone somewhere to remove or indeed add a mintmark and then theres the foreign fakes coming in.If i was going to spend a lot of money i'd probably want it slabbed prior,a nice grade is important sure , but authenticity is vital these days i think.

I agree. Thanks for all the input.

As I have been reading and thinking about it, I think some coins belong in slabs (sounds like a piece of meat), however, I think most coins I will acquire will be placed in 2X2's (in a red box). This will also help me to concentrate on the coin and not the slab.

I do not think folks mentioned slabbing can add a state of preservation. But I slab for consistency and I do not get hung up on the coin is of a high enough value to have it slabbed. Now that said, I stated off raw, got burned, and then went to slabs for insurance. Now we find out that is not the TPG can be wrong also. So I do both! and here is my raw set.

                    That is definitely worth displaying.

Do you keep any in 2X2's that can be admired by themselves or taken out to be examined closely?

That's a beautiful set. I'm working on mine, and want to start off with raw examples just to get everything cheaper (is this a good method?), and then upgrade to slabs where I see fit.

There are many reasons to slab a coin and just as many for not slabbing one. In general, I greatly prefer non-slabbed coins, however, I will slab important coins that I believe will have a value of at least $150 or so after grading. I mainly do this if I'm planning on selling a coin or if I feel I'll keep it forever and my family will have an easier time dealing with the coin in a slab after my death. For most poeple, you're far better off buying a coin already in a slab because the process can be very pricey in the end.

That is a standard issue 1970ish Capital Plastic Board. Since they did not make them past 1974, I have 2 boards with the dates scratched off to complete the 4 board set.

Beautiful Raw collection. Been looking for years for those boards. Sweet! I will purchase slabs for safety, but rarely will slab any.
