    1917p ddo

    Hi Guys,

I figured I'd throw up a few pics and a background story on a recent find. I purchased a couple lots of carded wheats on Ebay a little while back. The lots were rather large (~1900 coins per lot) and things got out of hand in the final seconds of bidding. After the dust settled, I started to get that sinking feeling that I spent waaaaaay too much on the items. After taking receipt of the coins and inspecting them more closely, however, I discovered a number of varieties that the previous owner obviously didn't notice. This coin represents, in my opinion, the coolest treasure in the lot. Given that all of the coins were carded and the dates and mintmarks were neatly written on each card, I assumed the previous owner had inspected them more closely and there wouldn't be anything like this among them. If nothing else, I've learned that I should ALWAYS inspect every coin thoroughly before passing it off!

Thanks guys. I wish it were high enough grade to show more separation...still a surprising find, though. I assume the heavy wear is the reason the previous owner didn't notice it.

A lot of collectors don't bother with varieties or looking for them, I would imagine this would be the case.

If it came from the lots where the seller was also selling 4500+, several large groups, I bid heavily, guess I should have bid even more. Lol, great find!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure we're talking about the same seller. I purchased the last two large lots of carded cents he had for sale. He sent me a message and advised that I check the coins carefully since some of his previous customers were reporting doubled dies, RPMs, etc. in the lots they received. As it turns out, the original owner was a wheat cent hoarder who saw fit to card just about any and every wheat cent he owned and even got the whole family involved in the action (whether they liked it or not)...which might also play into why some of the rare varieties were missed.

Overall, I'm pleased with what I received given the price paid...but I don't think I could have justified spending much more. At the end of the day, though, I've found three doubled dies (1917P-1DO-001, 1925S-1DO-001 and a 1937P-1DR), a couple 1928 S "Large S", a couple RPMs, a slew of semi-keys and a very high percentage of S-minted coins in general. I started watching his auctions when he was posting the 4500+ lots and I kinda wish I would have bid on those as well .

Great find! The 1917 ddo wasn't discovered until some time in the 70's
High grade examples are very rare indeed.

Was this the guy with the 14-D in one of the pics?

I seem to recall that from one of his earlier auctions...the seller's Ebay ID is silveroakenterprises. Unfortunately, neither of the two lots I purchased contained a 1914-D...or any other key dates, for that matter...

In hindsight, one might have done fairly well by purchasing everything the guy listed...but deep pockets would have been required...
