    Reporting eBay auctions.

    Hello everyone,

I was reading one of the many "buyer beware" discussions regarding wrongfully described variety auctions. Shortly after, I made the mistake of surfing e-bay. I noticed two sellers in particular who's entire inventory was nothing but normal coins being described as major doubled dies. Of course, all provided pictures were of normal coins. I actually contacted one seller and was of course given an earful of how little I knew and how wrong I was. Big surprise!

After no help from the seller, I went through the process of reporting several of his auctions. Unfortunately, I found the reporting process to be way less than fulfilling. I never felt I could even accurately describe the problem (item not as described) given the restrictive choices on the drop down menus.

My questions to the forum are: has any of you successfully reported a fraudulent auction and had it successfully taken down? If so, did you have to do anything special aside from following the "report this item" link to achieve this? Finally, will e-bay contact me and ask for clarification or will me reporting it be enough to get it looked at? Does E-bay hire coin experts to review these reports or am I just wasting my time?

What I do know is that I am totally fed up with these types of sellers and the damage they do to our hobby. i am wanting to lend a hand to stem the tide, but am hoping for some advice from those more experienced in these matters. Thanks in advance and if this should be posted in the "going once..." Section I apologize for that.

The one auction I reported was thankfully taken down. It was a misrepresented coin, but they ultimately took it down because the seller was using copyrighted images...I am not sure how well auctions are dealt with when you report specific misrepresented coins, like doubled dies, etc.

Jason provided this link that is makes it much easier to report coins as you can fully describe your issues and arent stuck to using the drop down menu. I use this link exclusively now and bookmarked it for future use.

Thank you so much for reminding me of that link. Sorry, I should have remembered that post, but now I have it bookmarked. Sorry for the rehash of a tired subject, but I am ready for war! Maybe not on Thanksgiving, but soon!

Absolutely daily with a fair amount of success - so long as they actually violate eBay rules. I have never tried reporting misdescribed varieties, but have had great luck getting 1922 "weak d's" removed.
If so, did you have to do anything special aside from following the "report this item" link to achieve this?
I used to use the link Antiquity provided, but I have a separate link for my use. Sorry, but I cannot share it.
Finally, will e-bay contact me and ask for clarification or will me reporting it be enough to get it looked at?
They used to, but I have not heard much lately. Do not know what happens in your case.

So far as I know, they do not "hire" (in the sense that they pay them) them, but they do have access to many.

Thank you so much for the help so far everyone. I used Antiquities link and reported 6 of these auctions last night. One was for a normal coin listed as a 1955 DDO#1 with a $3000.00 buy it now! I really hope they pull that one because its so blatantly NOT "the big one - .

BTW, I have no idea what kind of response time you are going to get this weekend. They do not cover every weekend normally and what they are doing this weekend I have no idea. However, they did work yesterday.

Well, no matter what I have at least learned the correct procedures to follow. Thanks again everyone. I will strive to report things as early as possible when I see them and hope for some success. I will update you on my experiences as I learn more.

I tried to close down a couple folks claiming to have 1909 VDB Matte Proof Lincolns only finding my self stuck in the check a box only, non message system of Ebay which needless to say, did not shut them down.

That's the same experience I had at first. The link that Antiquity provided at least gives you the option to describe the problem in a text box - a major improvement!

Ebay usually set up a Guide or Review section where one can actually post any examples or pics and description of Varieties. You are allowed to add the correct info that buyers can use to guide them in making purchases of difficult or new coin if there is insufficient data avaliable. They have also asked for buyers experiences covering their purchases outside of the feedback dialogue box. This is where you can freely state what's on your mind. I hope this will help in some way. If they get enough complaints on the same item they tend to pull it or the seller removes the item or change the details.

Thanks for sharing this with us and another victory for the small guy. This will help other collectors and buyers in the future.

Thanks for taking down the auctions, John. That's one less person in the world getting ripped off by misrepresented coins.
