If I am reading his post correctly, at the close of the auction, he was the high bidder. He won the auction and therefore is bound by the eBay contract "By clicking Confirm bid, you commit to buy this item from the seller if you are the winning bidder." Had the supposed shill bidder withdrawn his bid after the auction closed, you would be correct. So I believe they can make you buy it assuming they determine there were no shenanigans.

Ebay can't "make" you do anything. They can't withdraw money from your Paypal account, they can't force you to purchase an item even after your binding bid. They CAN level an unpaid item claim against you if there wasn't anyting weird going on, if you have multiple unpaid items in a month it can affect your ability to bid on some seller's items, but eBay can't make someone do something any more than my dog can make an omelette.

OK! So technically you are correct. eBay cannot make you buy it. However, you would be violating a law if you did not. Yes, it is only contract law, but that agreement you made when you bid (and when you joined eBay) is absolutely valid in every state in the nation and most of the rest of the world.

I completely agree with you, but in a case of bid manipulation, I believe there's somewhat of a loophole here.

If you had proof that the bids were manipulated, I would agree. I also agree that the bidding is very suspicious to put it mildly. But you do not have proof. After all, he was willing to pay $125 for it so the worst that can happen that way would be that he has to pay $125 for the coin he wanted for up to $125. Like has been said several times, he should call eBay. They actually have some very good and helpful people working there (along with some of the others - ask for a supervisor if you get one of these). They also have all kinds of programs designed to catch shill bidders. My guess is that if they say it is not shill bidding, it is not shill bidding or it would be the one time these 2 have done it.

              Try and MAKE me pay.....LOL

              i already called ebay.
              didnt hear anything yet.
i will call them again tomorrow.
my argument is that the bidder had no intention of buying.
he ran the bid up,won, then jumped out.....

so he should be disqualified....not just the last bid...BUT ALL HIS BIDS.

he was a non entity in the auction.as far as i am concerned ALL his bids are null and VOID.

ebay cant MAKE me pay is correct.i had an exwife who thought she could make me pay....it didnt work out for her either

                    Ebay agrees with me

                    I spoke to a rep.
Ebay agrees with me and if the seller gives bad feedback or reports a non payment.....Ebay will remove it.

You are correct. BUT, they can leave a good BAD feedback.

Yup, they will also infract you which affects your power seller discount and benefits for leaving positive feedback that isn't positive. It's really a catch 22 as a seller.

                              Ebay Resolution

The bid was $25.00 before the other person, who retracted his bid,got involved.
So I offered the seller $75.00 which is 3X the bid before the other bidder started running up the bid.
The seller accepted the offer and I now have the coin.
                              Positive feedback for us both.
The coin in question is a 1988-P RDV-006
From the sellers pictures,I cherrypicked it as a Wexler WTRD-005 Very Early Die.
The huge die crack that runs from Lincoln's neck, through his collar and down through his jacket is absent.
It's at Wexler now and am pretty sure its a new die stage listing.
Heres the sellers pictures.I didnt want to say anything untill I had it in hand.
