Is there anything to prevent proofs from toning? This one started at the rim and slowly worked to the center with a dark green tone. I know theres nothing to remove it but can it be prevented or halted once it starts?

I think I remember reading on their site that it would halt things like toning. I could be wrong. Simon is right that it doesnt remove it though. I forget who the Verdi-Care guy is but if someone could have him chime in, might help the OP.With initials like "SDP" I was destined to end up collecting coinsComment

If your just going yo keep them for yourself and never sell them, then use EZ dip. Another dip in acetone, and into a airtight. The coin will look just as it did. This is considered coin doctoring by some. But if your never going to sell it, it's conserving it.Comment

Not sure why, but the '70-S and '71-S proofs seem more likely to tone. Though the tone pattern on the obverse is strange. Could someone have dipped it before you acquired it? Or are other coins doing the same thing? I have seen an album start to haze proofs, but as long as the flip is NOT vinyl, nor is anything else, I would have thought it would be ok. Maybe Airtites in flips going forward?

I would think that the 2 x 2s were not mylar or archival safe and meant for long term storage. The vinyl content leached out and more then likely damaged the coins. I'm unclear wether that type of damage continues or is halted when removed from a vinyl flip.ANA, CONECA, FUN, NGC, PCGSComment

Verdi-care might prevent it from continuing, but I don't think it will reverse anything. Once it has begun, I would say the best thing is to hope it continues to tone in some really cool way so it would be worth a premium to somebody. All opinions expressed are not necessarily shared by willbrooks or his affiliates. Taking them may result in serious side effects. Results may vary. Offer not valid in New Jersey.Comment

If it was from a vinyl flip, then the PVC contamination needs to be removed with acetone. The damage is likely done though, if that is what happened.

The pictures here are not anywhere close to how the coin looks in hand, its actually dark purple almost black with green tint. This coin looks really bad in the pictures. I put the coin in acetone to remove any contaminants and its now in a dansco album. Ill see how that goes.Comment

You cannot remove the toning without destroying the proof. If you want to halt it, rinse with acetone and put it into an airtite. My entire proof collection gets this treatment. They all look minty fresh still today.
When storing coins be sure to use a multi-layer approach....no layers = mo betta. I like to use on my good stuff:
1) airtite
2) airtite goes into 2x2
3) 2x2 goes into binder page (I like Cowans brand)
4) Binder pages go into ziplock with desiccant and sacrificial red cent
5) ziplock goes into tupperware
Some of my items are even double bagged and double "tupperwared".VERDI-CARE™ ALL METAL CONSERVATION FLUIDComment
