    1957-D Ducktail Lincoln

I found one of these a couple of years ago and had been looking for another without success until recently. It is my favorite non-variety as it looks like someone tried to give Lincoln a hairstyle more appropriate to the 1950's. In addition to the ducktail, there are gouges below LIBERTY, through the "D" , between WE and "T", and a stickleback gouge in the hair.

While searching recently, I found a clue as to why the Ducktails may be scarce. The ducktail and other gouges were largely polished out. Only parts of the D” gouge, the gouge between WE and “T,” and the stickleback remain.

I've seen that die before searching 57-Ds. I still haven't quite figured out what those wispy die gouges were caused by. I see them frequently on cents from 1957 and 1958.

Have you seen the first version or both?
