    consenus on collectable????

Hi All, i am working on a study of the Lincoln cent and this about the consensus of being collectable, What determines to be valuable in Lincoln cents.

Lets do a study here, if the us mint decides to get rid of the Lincoln cent for good, what kind of value would the coins be worth and the coins i am talking about are the doubled dies and mint errors and rpm's,trail dies, because if they do this and decide to melt it all down, you are not going to be able to find these coins, unless they are being held by collectors themselves and the price would be crazy, so this brings me to me overall question, what should you collect as far as doubled dies go??? I believe you should collect it all and even the minor doubled dies because if this happens, you will not be able to even get your hands on those coins either. In my opinion, the little guy(minor doubled die, rpm's,trail dies and so on that is minor) would then have a nice premium to it even though it is minor, what some may say as minor would be for example ddr extra columns and most of these are listed doubled dies but they have not caught on yet but i believe they will.

The simple thing here is, would you or would you not collect it all, trying to find a consensus of who does this. as for me i collect every doubled die that comes along, whether it be minor or strong, i treat every coin the same and even my rare ones i do the same, in my opnion each coin has its own place in history and that is what i love about being a Lincoln cent collector, you never know what you are going to find next.

I say yes to collecting it all, you never know what is going to happen and if you have it all already, then your good. lol

    thank you

I don't base what I collect in terms of varieties on value, or what I predict the value would be in the future...I base what I collect on what is interesting or unusual to me, and that happens to be most die varieties...both major and minor.

Now, some varieties I sell because I have multiples or I just "recycle" my collection a little bit...using the money from selling coins to buy more. But I do set aside all doubled dies that I find, regardless of strength. What happens to them after that point depends on if I feel like selling them or not.

I think if the melt down starts in USA Mint. Every coin will increase slowly in value especially the coppers.

      So hold them.

I love the big DD's and extreme clashes. The minor and light clashes i hold but do not care much for.

I have hundreds of minor dd's just keeping not even cataloging.

As far as a melt down starting, I have like $500 face in my room that I am slowly cycling through, so I think I'm covered.

George: Why don't you make this as a poll item? With choices that would cover most bases and get a percentage that way?

I don't collect with much thought to value or future value...it's mostly about what I like and the thrill of the find. And, for the most part, I sell any finds worth more than $150 so I can buy other toys like boats, guns, fishing tackle,skidloaders,etc...My goal is to have fun and die penniless.

I don't collect or even look at any thing minor. I go really for the cherrypickers varieties. I pull out the coins with the big dates search them, and all the rest go in the bucket. I also keep all BU coins from 80 and back. There are a few clashes and rpms not listed in the CP that i do keep. This is just what I collect and do.

I've never bounced a check in my entire life, but if the last check I write in my life doesn't bounce, I will consider myself a failure.

It will change things when they stop producing cents but I think there will still be a lot available sort of like wheat cents are now 50 plus years after they stopped making them.

If hoarding be sure to hoard nice uncs and focus on dates that are less common, don't hoard tons of random circ junk.
Who knows if the prices are similar to bulk wheat cents but if it is similar consider they haven't been a great investment if just common circs going for 3-4 cents after 50 years. Even the same cent invested in relatively safe stuff (assuming you ended up around 7%) might have doubled every 10 years so 10 years = 2 cents, 20 = 4 cents, 30 = 8 cents 40 = 16 cents 50 = 32 cents....
Even hoarding 90% silver over that period didn't keep up. And this doesn't consider you had to protect and store the stuff 50 plus years without something happening to it.

Saving some moderate or big varieties probably has the most payoff.
If someone hoarded a roll of 55 DDOs when they were $5 each they did pretty well. I'm sure at that time in the late 50s spending $250 on a roll of cents seemed crazy but it sure beat saving 5 bags of circ wheats they pulled out of change.

Whatever you do be sure it's fun while you do it

I go for anything I can sell for a profit, unless I keep it for my personal collection. Right now I'm working on LCR's top 50 varieties. I also have a nearly complete collection of "normal" Lincoln's.
