Has anyone had any luck getting wheats out of a tube that have been in there too long? I was going to try warm the tube quickly with hair dryer and hope the plastic expands and the pennies don't! Any other suggestions?
Removal of Unc. wheats stuck in tube?!

I've got about 40 rolls of unc cents that I've just been setting aside that are like that. I've heard the blow dryer works. One of these days I'll get around to testing the theory.“What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.” -
I use a strong pair of needle-nose pliers and slowly break / tear the plastic tubing from around the cents... It's a long and arduous process, releasing one cent at a time, but I am wary to use heat, not wanting to possibly affect the coppers tonal conditions... I would love an easier method though.Comment

The last time I encountered this I too slowly broke and peeled the dang tube apart

I've heated them with just turning by hand near our gas stove, then place the open end face down and hit the side of the edge on a countertop. they will go flying but will also come out without destroying the coins.Comment

I've removed the by hitting the plastic tube with a pair of pliers on the edge where the rim is. I love finding these as they have been unsearched for years and the seller may want to unload them as he doesn't want to deal with them.Richard S. Cooper Some have asked about my images I use, and I'm glad to say I've completed a DVD of these. Ask if you are interested. Newer members like these.Comment

I tried the dryer with no luck. Absolutely no movement in the tube. I gave the end a few little taps, more like whacks, with pliers and the first fell out! The top part was easy to break until the tube got thicker. Kept tappin and they slowly tilt untill I can get a toothpick in between the and get the next one out. Only about seven out so far, but Im sure I have a DDO-001 and one of the gnarliest wheat stalk die breaks I've seen!Comment

Some good tips here in this thread.

I have opened a bunch like that and this works well for me anyway. I use a dremmell with a real thin cutoff wheel and I mean the thinnest they make. I then carefully score the tube going long ways starting at the top and then down around bottom and up other side. I dont need to say be careful as that is pretty obvious. Scoring the bottom of the roll as close as you dare to get is the key. after doing a few I just figured the bottom one would take one for the team.
NOW after scoring the tube as stated I put it in the freezer for 45 min to a hr and the set it on a solid surface that will not give and then i take tube and hit it on corner against hard surface with cloth under it. It cracks open. Sometimes it opens all the way other times you have to hit it a couple times. Depending on you skill with dremmel. Keep the line you cut straight as it makes for a better break
I used to try so many different ways like peeling pieces off and trying to pick them out one or two at a time. I know this way works well for me as I have opened probably 50 rolls this way.Comment

I think I want to try this way with a dremel next time. I probably cause some nicks on the coins with the tappin. They eventually start turning so the rims aren't flush together anymore, and actually start contacting the surface. It's probably the wight of the coins behind the first one pushing is forward which may make some marks also.I have opened a bunch like that and this works well for me anyway.
