Coin Pages getting brittle

I have been using Lead Dog Vinyl pages for my coins flips for years, but I notice that some of the 20 pocket pages have started to get brittle. Anyone have a suggestion for a different brand or type.

Yes. Cowens. Much better pages.

What do you suggest Jason. All the pages I found , even Cowens, are vinyl.

BCW pages are made of Polypropylene. There are other brands.

I still have nightmares from finding my old childhood vinyl albums and the damage done to some of my old Lincolns and Jeffersons. It took 25 years, but I still don't want it anywhere near my coins...

Hum, that's interesting!! A few years back I ordered some Cowens cardboard coin 2x2 holders for some of my World Coins. They were so bad I returned them. I was told by the supplier that when Whitman bought out Cowens that quality of the Cardboard flips went down hill, "That's was an understatement".

I'll have to try some of their pages my next order.

Don't want to sound like I don't care, and I do see where you mentioned pages later on in your comment, but the conversation is dealing with the 20 pocket pages, not the cardboard flips. However, our supply preferencess might be something we can make a sticky about.

Yea.. I like that idea. I have Cowen pages that don't seem to be hurting my coins at all, yet. They are vinyl and very nice quality. Never thought anything of it til Jason said poly

If you use archival safe flips, the pages in which the flips are stored don't make any difference. The PVC does not penetrate the flips. I have been using (the exact same) Cowens pages for over 20 years - no issues. But then again, I don't store my coins in a hot attic, which could make a big difference.

I know we aren't talking flips or 2x2s here, but it's the holder that touches the coins that matter - the pages are generally irrelevant if the holders are safe.

In that case Im good to go. Got them in mylar flips in the cowen pockets

Bob I think your idea about a sticky on supply preferences is a great idea!!

Regarding the cardboard flips, I reference them only because I had problems with the manufacturer who is the same as the 20 pocket pages.

But a point made above that coins that are in safe flips should not be impacted by vinyl pages is a good one.. The problem I'm having now is the Lead Dog Vinyl pages I have are getting brittle and breaking. I've ordered some non Vinyl pages to see if these will work out " LOL I'll let you know in 5 or 6 years if they turn brittle and break!!"

I always found that the non-vinyl soft pages tear easily. Just be careful with them and they should serve well for a while. I just happen to prefer using Cowens pages - those seem indestructible.

I hate to (re)deviate from the OP's question, but I guess now's as good a time as any. Are the cardboard flips that bad? That's what I've been using, simply because I bought so many when I started collecting, I didn't know any better.

Not bad at all. They're fine for storage. Most of us prefer flips so it's easier to access the coin when referencing or just to look.
