Filled some important holes in my wheat set!

    Hi everyone,

As much as I loved my brief collection of silver coins, I felt the need to stick to my copper roots. I recently completed a trade of many of my older silver pieces for some keys/semi-keys. Would love to hear your opinions/grades on these. Pics aren't the best but I shot them pretty quickly. I picked up:

    1909-S (G-VG)

    1914-D (AG-G)

    1911-S (F-VF)

I don't plan on adding the varieties like 1955 DDO or 1922 Plain to my official set, so the only ones I've got left for my wheats are the big 1909-s VDB and a few other select dates/mintmarks.

    Enjoy!

    Simon

Hi Simon, those are some great pick ups. Im not an expert grader, but they seem to be pretty close to what your assesment is. Good job. Tom

I'm with you on excluding the '22 no D, Simon. I don't understand it. It's pretty much accepted as common knowledge that it's nothing more than an overpolished die, and yet people insist on spending a fortune on it?

No '55 ddo to be added? Sacrilege for a variety guy! While the cost is prohibitive, I would think this would be on your dream list of things to add when your date/mm run is completed, no?

That being said, I don't have a '55 ddo in my set, either. (Not for lack of want.) While an amazing variety, it's always available. Some truly rare varieties you have to jump on when they come up for sale. And that's where my money goes. Eventually, I want to own a high grade, clean example of the 1955 doubled die. It's easily the most famous die variety to collectors and non collectors alike.

          Good luck with your set

I get where you are coming from Simon. I am down to 10 dates for the complete common cent collection from 09 to date. I too do not count 55 DDO, or the 22 no D as they are not common cents but varieties. Not that I'd pass on a chance to own one.
I am lightyears away from knowing my grades -- but
i do seem to be in tune with you.

Nice.......question I have and sorry do not mean to take over thread but since we all have things needed to complete sets, why not start a thread of wants by all and if someone has a few extra of that year, work out a fair offer whatever that might be and get the sets filled. Not trying to take any business away from the people that sell here but it could work.

Yes, that sounds like a good idea (posting your wants/missing).

I have two complete sets now (VF+) but I only have one 1909SVDB and I don't really care to get another. At some point, I will probably sell off or give away the second set and keep the first one (many in that one are BU).

I have been going through this hoarde of wheaties and I only keep doubled dies, RPMs and examples that are high quality (replacing existing ones in my sets). I pitch the lousy ones back into bank rolls and the others I sell off at a local coin shop (bid board) in bulk. I routinely put semi-key dates in the bulk sales (lucky buyers).

If you still need semi-key dates, just list them (wherever) and I am sure I have some floating around, and I will stop pitching them back into the bulk sales.

I also have lots of accumulated rolls of 1968 to 1974 San Francisco cents and I also have rolls of 2009D (all 4 styles). I don't really care about them (they're just sitting in boxes).

Hey, Christmas is coming up and I'm in a jolly spirit.

Congrats Simon! You can just send the '09-S & '14-D on to me! Then I will only need the '09-S VDB & that '31-S we talked about months back. No really, I am happy for you man.

Congrats! Those are some important holes to fill.

                          09S - G4
                          14D - AG
11D - VG8-F12 (hard to see in the pics)

Stick with Lincolns, don't get distracted. I still regret getting my collection so fragmented and wish I would have stayed 100% with Lincolns. Now I have lots of silver, gold, proof/mint sets, nickels, etc. To me, it's all junk that was a waste of money. LOL Now I'm stuck with the burden of eventually unloading it all. Honestly, I had an interest in the "other" stuff for a few years and now it sits in a bank vault and I never even look at it. I'm always thinking of the really nice Lincolns I could have bought with all that money.

On the 22D plain, it's simple man...just buy the bargain priced die 1, 3 or 4. Believe it or not, I've seen more DP2's than I've seen of the others and I still think the 1-3-4's are rarer but not in demand so the price stays depressed. I had a nice DP4 a couple of years ago that I sold to a CC forum member to help him out. Since I sold it, I've had situations come up (like this) where I could have sold it 5-6 more times! Unfortunately, I have not seen another since! Anyhow, the 1-3-4's can often be found for <$100. The dealers I know and dumb and they sell them cheap because they're not DP2.

Thanks, Thad. The 1911-S is tough to see in the pictures, but in hand it has very defined wheat stalks. I'd probably say F15 (I'll see if I can upload a better picture later)

Long term goal is complete set of 1C coins, 1793-present. Since I am farthest along with my wheats, I thought I'd start there and work my way backwards (getting the IHCS and lastly the Large Cents).
