    Wow! Wow! and Wow!

I am really stunned to hear this? We don't have any issues getting boxes of coin here in Canada. When we were dealing with pennies, I was able to walk out with 4 boxes everyday (if I choose to) There were no questions asked, whatsoever.

Why would there be such a vast difference between your banks (banking system) and ours, I wonder?

I think it has something to do with what you said about the Canadian roll I found. Your banks get coin straight from the mint. Here in the US we have companies that supply the banks for a fee.

Still, customer service is customer service and demand is demand.

I think that is horrible to limit customer's and dictate what 'their' needs are.

I still say... Wow! Wow! and Wow! lol

Hey Lara, that is crazy huh? I think enamel7 is correct, the bricks I get from the bank are taped boxes with BRINKS on them. Brinks is an armored truck transportation service that provides point-to-point pickup and delivery services for cash, coins, checks and other valuables. So my guess is they are just the delivery point from the Federal Reserve to the banks, but somebody has to pay them for their services. Maybe the Fed and the Banks split the bill???

Oh, BTW... this is a mixed brick. Thought it might be all shields, I have this horrible thought every time I get a new brick. I very much dislike searching shields.

VAB - Do you by chance have a BofA nearby? I have several near me and every one of them pretty much bends over backwards to give me coins. Best part? I don't even have an account with them. I bring cash, they give me boxes of whatever I ask for: cents, nickels, dimes, halves if they have them. I am of the opinion that BofA is the evil empire that really helped mess our economy up but I gotta say that their tellers are super awesome!

SunTrust on the other hand...well my mom told me that if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all. I guess I don't have any thing to say about them ;)

furryfrog02, yes there is a BofA not far away and I will definitely check with them. Seems like you told me about this once before and at the time I thought SunTrust was going to be ok. My mamma always said if you have something potentially offensive to say, say it privately so you are welcome to send me a PM.

I'm pretty sure I have spouted off about SunTrust in the past. The last straw with them was when the teller took a Walker out of some loose halves and tucked it under her keyboard and then handed me the rest of the clads. She got really rude when I asked her about it too. They just aren't collector friendly in my area. I have seen several with signs on the door that says "no coins for non-customers". Now it seems in your case that even customers can't get coins.
I would check out BofA though. I probably get 6-8 boxes of dimes from them a week plus the occasional nickel or cent box and I don't have an account with them.

BofA always get me coin with no problems. Heck, today they didn't have a box and gave me one of their plastic boxes with customer rolls. Just told me to drop it back off sometime. Of course they have been ordering halves for me forever.

One trick that I use is to not dump where I pick up. I use Fifth Third bank. My local branch is happy to supply whatever I need. In return I dump my searched coins 25 miles away at a branch by my office. Also helps to ensure that I don't dip into coins I've already searched.

It seems like the BOA is much more customer oriented regarding boxes especially when you bank with them.

I used to dump far away also -- until I realized all the banks both same bank but branches and all the competitors use the same company to roll the coins. So while I run the risk of getting some of the same coins back -- they are mixed with the 40-50 surrounding banks that I know of and who knows how many others send to same rolling Co.

Arjohn, that is quite interesting to know. Not that it applies to me though.

So, a new question arises, if what you say is true, is it like that for your whole country? (Minus the larger cities, I would assume).

It's a senseless question but one I had none-the-less lol

Don't know for sure... Some places mentioned by others accept rolled cents. Most every bank I have EVER done business with from Chicago to the SW suburbs I live in now accept ONLY loose coins. They get counted, bagged and sent off to be rolled. They get rolled bricks back.... I would imagine there are a few places that have the rolling machines - but I don't know how many banks dump to the same buckets....

My bank sends them back to the Fed in Philadelphia every Thursday...so I dump them Wednesday. All of the bags I get are from their counting machine so I'm fairly sure I don't get the same ones over and over.

Wow, we have a currency law here, where if the amount of coins is equal to or more than what a roll would consist of, then then establishment has the right to refuse accepting them, unless they are rolled.

Our banks here in Canada will NOT accept them unless they ARE rolled, with the exception of TD Canada Trust, they only very recently brought in coin machines where you can drop them in, kind of like the ones you guys have at TOPS. If you are not personal banking customer with TD then you get charged for use of the machine.

I thought it was like that everywhere. Not rolled = not accepted

I asked the teller the other night (when I brought in my Canadian pennies) what happens with them, she said she "thinks" a company comes and picks it up and "their" machine rolls them and sends them back to whoever. I said, the mint? lol "I don't know" she said. So in essence, I suppose we are just 'starting' to adopt your ways of banking?

Fascinating. It still blows my mind away, such close countries with a similar cultures, yet many different subtle differences in how things are done.
