I think the easiest way to tell a small date is that the inner tail of the 9 will point to the right on a small date. it will point to the mintmark on a large date.
This might help:

Look at how squared off and blunt the inside curl of the 9 is on the LD.
That rules out most coins as SD.
Still be careful, sometimes MD or hits can make the blunt end look pointed so it's a one way thing, blunt ones will be LD but if it's not blunt then look close to see if everything else is correct for a SD before celebrating
I'm pretty sure these are both large dates but as I said, I'm still uncertain about the subtle differences. Maybe somebody can help me by sending me a small date so I can have it to compare to my large dates. Here's the picture:
I have learned on this site that the weak LIBERTY is the best indicator, along with the higher 7. I appreciated the comparison photos on this site last year when an Ebay seller sent me a Large instead of a Small date saying that his local coin dealer told him it was a small. When I sent him a link to this site he ignored it. I sent back the coin and he charged me with switching coins. Some people.... I noticed that his price went down 25% I assume because customers caught on.

NEVER buy a small date from ebay unless you know exactly what you're looking at. The vast majority of listed small dates are incorrectly attributed by the ignorant or are just scammers looking to make a buck.
