    Re: Blank Planchets

    Hi All,
A quick question on blank planchets. I aquired what seems to be one. Altho it appears to be genuine, one thing ( or more).0bv and rev appear to have uniform fine marks like 80's planchets so to speak. The edge altho has a 3 definate sides. Not flat . The flow seems right on the edges. I have to give you a verbal description, cant take any pics now. But , if it is what it seems, have you guys seen a 3 sided edge on a planchet? Is it incomplete?i need to weigh it to make sure its not shy of material. If it is its the best job i have ever seen. This is the first example i have ever found.
Any comments aporeciated, thanks loads, Tom

Sounds like a planchet that made it thru the rimming process but never thru the strike!!!

I have found only 1 blank planchet, while I have found 2 1999 WAM's. They are a rare find in circulation. It was a zinc planchet.

Ok Brothers, here is the scoop. The Daughter unit finally got home and brought her scale from baking class. Sorry it took so long. Total weight 2.6 grams. Seems its the same as a Shield cent. By the way, sure wish i could find a 99 Wam.:-) So , does the weight seem proper? I havent scratched the rim, but the weight seems correct for a zinc planchet. Thanks you dang Dudes:-) Tom

ps, Lincoln is awesome, 35 pounds of pure energy. A great dang dog!!!!!

2.6 is just a bit heavy not much tho... Normal for a plated is 2.5... I do not know the allowable plus or minus tho... If you hit a99 hard enough with a hammer it will be a 99 wam Glad to here Lincoln is doing good... Bet that 35 pounds of pure energy feels more like 135 pounds when taking you for a walk !!!

It's always good to weigh a few normal ones to see if the scale is right on, that will show you if it's .1 grams high on the normal ones too.

Hi Ed, the scale i have doesnt do hundrethts if grams. Weighed a few, seems 2.6 is as close as i can get. Should i consider this one as genuine? Tom

I have weighed plenty of 2.6 g zinc planchets. Certainly within specs of a zinc planchet.

                      The weight seems close enough.
Not sure what you meant by 3 sided edge but I'm assuming it means the rim was already upset.
I'm not 100% sure but I think zinc blanks (type1) might be upset to be planchets (type2) before plating.

What im thinking is that it was upset but not fully. Sure wish i could take a pic of it. The edge just has a taper, a partial flat edge and a reverse taper. Very uniform. Wish i could explain it better.
