There are several overlapping choices, with Cherrypickers Guide, Coppercoins, Wexler, Crawford, CONECA, among others I am sure. My question is, which carries the most clout, or respect if you will? Which do the TPG's recognize? I am getting ready to attribute a bunch of cents and would like to go with something that will be recognized years to come so that my kids and grandkids will have a better understanding of what they find in the safe after I am gone.
When it comes to attributing varieties...

That is pretty much a multiple choice question and also depends on what you are slabbing and who the TPG is. My choice for Lincoln Cents will always be Coppercoins.....but FS numbers on PCGS slabs are the best when you're looking to sell. You'll get quite afew different opinions on here so I moved this to the General Discussion as the the "Best Answer" is too subjective -
The Cherry Picker's Guide has the most clout because it only lists the creme de la creme(in most cases) of varieties. It's the only one of the aforementioned that PCGS or NGC will attribute. As for the others, I would say that a variety listed by Coneca has a slight edge in value, but they are very close to coppercoins and Wexler. Crawford attributions are virtually defunct now since Billy is no longer active.“What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.”Comment

Thanks for the replies. I mostly use Coppercoins to attribute. You cannot beat the photos and die markers. For the most part, I have only found Wide AM's, minor doubled dies and RPM's and a few other things. I will post some when I get home.
So if I want to create a "store of value", FS#'s in PCGS plastic is the way to go. How about just for attribution sake, so that the kids have more than "my opinion" written on a 2×2? Does ANACS recognize any other attributions other than Cherrypickers?
What about Coppercoins? Do any of the services recognize them? And since I have been out of the loop for the past few years, can anyone bring me up to date with the status of the Coppercoins site? It looks to be dormant, going through some sort of rebuild I assume?
Sorry for so many blind questions, just trying to get my finger back on the pulse after about a 5 year hiatus...Comment

I usually begin my attributions at Wexler's and Coppercoins.com. Combined, they have the most extensive variety listings.
ANACS will attribute Wexler, Coppercoins, Coneca, and CPG. If you have a CPG variety, I would recommend PCGS.“What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.”Comment

Keep in mind though, as a general rule, if it isn't listed in the CPG, it probably isn't worth slabbing. There are exceptions, but you're not going to want to spend the money to slab every tilted serif RPM that you find.“What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.”Comment

Yes, they are working on upgrading the site and not currently taking coins for attribution. Bob is a member here and pops in every few daysComment

I would definitely agree with the general consensus of everyone who has responded here. As mentioned, CPG varieties do carry the most clout although a lot of folks see them as lacking for some rather nice varieties. People are more aware of CONECA listings unless they deal primarily with Lincoln cents. That is also a very important distinction to be made here. Coppercoins deals only with Lincoln cents while CONECA and Wexler deal with all denominations. We do collaborate on significant new finds, but ultimately, it is what system you feel comfortable with and which one meets your needs.Bob Piazza

I know I am no pro here but for my money on Lincolns I prefer Bob and the folks here... If Copper Coins did grading and slabbing of Lincolns that is where I would send them... Guess I'm kind of one sided because of all the help I have gotten here... They do work with CONECA and Wexler on the coins and if they are unsure bout something they have no problems with asking others opinions!!!Jim

If you are worried about the future. ANACS and ICG will slab more varieties than others, NGC is a company that I like,
and most respect PCGS over all others...
That being said
get a book or cd-rom from the attributer that shows the variety.
contact Wexler, Coppercoins, CONECA, etc. and ask if you can have them verify with a photographic proof after the coin is slabbed.
I do not know if they will do that, but a letter from Wexler, or whoever with a photo of the slab or the slab number in the letter will back up the variety.
the book or cd-rom will show what to look for.
MOST varieties that are worth slabbing can be looked up on the internet so you can see what to look for.
WAMs and CLAMs, small and large dates, some DDOs and DDRs are listed in the redbook.
I put a paper with Wexler,Coneca, FS number, website to see it, and a personal pic together with each variety in my safety deposit box so if something happens to me....
My wife and son would know what they are looking at and prices....Member: Florida State representative for the ANA, Florida state representative for CONECA, F.U.N. and the Ocala Coin ClubComment
