In God We Trust printed on edge of coin??

Hi everyone. My first post is a question about some of the pennies I've start to inspect and noticed that some are printed a bit offset to the top with the words "In God We Trust" touching the ridge. I've heard that this coulc be from a worn die or something. So does anyone know if this is common or a defect. Have found it on several dates in the 60's and one in 57.
Thanks for any help you might be able to offer.

That's normal for 1968 cents. That was the last year that the mint used a master hub that had been in use for years and it was simply worn out and deteriorated.

That's actually pretty common on cents starting in the 50' s all the way to 68...they used the dies until they were ready to fall apart and the design itself was partly to blame. You'll notice an improvement starting in 1969 due to a major redesign of the obverse which alleviated this problem.

Thanks for that info. Do you know if that would reduce the value of the coin to a collector?

No, it doesn't effect the value or the grade.

Actually, the problem was the master hub. It had been in use since 1916 and it was producing some ugly master dies.

Thanks for the feedback on the value of the grade. Do you think there are any photos of the machines they use(d)? That would be cool to see.
