    Cent or Penny?

Let's liven things up with a pointless inflammatory discussion.

As the self-appointed terminology police, I want to talk about what we should call this thing to which we dedicate so much of our lives. Should we call it a cent or a penny, or do you feel that either is ok? Most importantly, please explain why you feel the way you do! And yes, I have an opinion too, but I'll wait for a few responses first. Will it be a penny for my thoughts, or my two cents worth?

Let's have a good discussion, and keep it lighthearted. None of this:
    30
    Cent
    0%
    12
    Penny
    0%
    2
    Either is ok.
    0%
    16

    The poll is expired.

All opinions expressed are not necessarily shared by willbrooks or his affiliates. Taking them may result in serious side effects. Results may vary. Offer not valid in New Jersey.

I've had a couple too many eggnogs to give an elaborate explanation, but "penny" has been in the vernacular for so long that either is fine with me. Is it technically correct? No. However, it's here to stay, so I just go with it.

I vote for cent because using the term makes me feel more intelligent than I really am!

Cent all the way! When people want to argue about calling dimes and nickels by their correct name, I always remind them a dime is a "ten cent" piece not ten penny piece. Same with half dollars. We mistakenly call them 50 cent pieces. No one goes to a bank and asks for 50 penny pieces.

I prefer cent and think it's correct for the US.

I don't get bothered if others say penny, it says "pennies" on many cent wrappers and bank boxes and in normal use like "a penny arcade" or "penny pincher" etc. Most cashiers call them pennies. With all that in mind, I call them cents but others can say pennies and I won't be bothered.

Cent should be used when speaking numismatically, it is the correct technical term. However, either is fine because usually I know exactly what someone means when they use "penny"....which is the most common term used outside of numismatics.

On a side note, when I go to the bank I ask for a "box of pennies". I used a "box of cents" a few times and the Teller said "you mean of box of pennies?". Yes, that's what it says on the box and that's what Tellers call them! LOL
