Margood Lincoln Cent Holder for Errors & Varieties

BJ Neff passed on to me some LDB’s “LIBERTY Die Breaks” that were given to him by Fred Weinberg for us to image and add to the Lincoln Cent Die Breaks Called “BIE” section of the COC WEB Site. In this selection of coins was a coin in a coin holder I found as interesting as the coin it’s self. I’ve researched Margood, the name on the reverse of the holder and cannot find any information on the company. Based on the date of the coin and the designs on the holder I think they were made in the 50’s. These are the same type of designs that were used for illustrating errors and varieties on the Lincoln Cent as seen in both the BIE ODDITY COLLECTORS GUILD & THE CLASSIFICATION AND VALUE OF ERRORS ON THE LINCOLN CENT.

Note on the images below how the collector marked in red what he called “Dual Event Die Clash” above the E on LIBERTY and the 1 on the Date which is hand stamped 1959D on the illustration. The holder was made for the Wheat Cents 1909 – 1958. But as you can see this is a Memorial Cent.

That's a neat find and piece of numismatic history. Apparently Mar-good was a company started by Arnold Margolis and Mort Goodman.

The holder above would be a bit big for the general collector, but I can certainly see its usefulness for labeling errors and varieties. Can't tell you how many times I've wished for just a little more space to write on a cardboard holder.

Jody the holder is actually a 2"x2" holder.

Wow. Looked bigger than that. Then I like the way it's offset.

That's a very interesting holder. I'll give Fred a call Tuesday and ask if he has more info on where he picked it up or has BJ done this already?

Super cool! Thanks for sharing! I write small, but when you have a coneca, Coppercoins, Wexler, and FS # it gets really cramped. I like the offset without the image. Cool piece of history!

I have cross referenced into a master list all the Lincoln Wheat Cent Varieties - therefore only have to put a single reference number on my flips - the number corresponding to my master list.

Better not lose that master list.

That is for sure - actually my flips get 2 numbers - The variety listing # from the catalog used for attribution (be it coppercoins, wexler, coneca, FS,or etc) and the xref #. The xref currently stands at 4220 entrees. Some are duplicates though. For example an WRPM-001 and 1mm-003 may have originally been entered individually into the master list as separate varieties and later established as the same. Therefore these would be cross referenced in the cross reference master list. I found it easier to cross reference the cross reference as opposed to going back through my collection changing the flips.

Very nice folder - I have never seen this before. In keeping with the idea of this thread, I have created several templates that I print and keep with some of my coins. I use them to sketch errors or defects in the coins. I would be happy to share these if you like. I have made lots of different files depicting various aspects of both the Wheat and Lincoln Memorial Cent. They are rather poor in quality as I had not planned on sharing - they were just an easy way for me to make notes about a coin. The files are drawn in Adobe Illustrator which can be saved as a PDF or JPG files. Below are two of my drawings of the whole Wheat Cent - Observed and Reverse. The PDF files are too large to upload on the forum, but something might be worked out. Some detail is lost when converted to JPG files.

                          Please let me know.

                            Coin Albums

I image my EV's and put them in albums. The albums are set up using the old PDS System which I started many years ago.

                              Update 3/11/16

I was able to acquire 3 MarGood Error Holder’s for Jefferson Nickels. So now we know they were also made for errors other than Cents. Imaged below are the Obverse and Reverse of one of these holders.
