I have a bunch of 1983 cents that I need to inspect and a collector friend of mine said I should weigh them to look for a "83" copper. He said the zinc"s will weigh 2.5 g and a copper will weigh 3.0. Now I know the "82's " are such but the "83's"? Is he messing with me ,cause he's been known to have fun at my exspence. Or true ?
It's true there have been some copper 83's found as well as a few other newer dates. I check all of mine using a copper/zinc sorter by running all the zinc dates thru it.
I sure hope you find a 1983P DDO, Die 1!! If you do, be sure to give us a shout out. Been trying to figure out the attribution of this one for a while!
The 1983 copper cents are a mistake. they happened to have a copper blank mixed into the copper plated zinc blank when they struck the coins.
This is along the line of the 1943 copper cents.
It is not like the 1982 copper and the copper plated zinc cents
a few have been found and as far as value....( pardon the pun) are worth a pretty penny
( you saw that coming.... didn't ya)
I would check your 1983 cents for abnormal die cracks,DDOs and DDRs, and also weigh them
