This show is this weekend (19th-21st). Will any members be at this show? This will be the first show I've ever been to, and i would love to meet any of you great folks. Here is a link to the show: http://www.upstatesccoinshow.com
Alas, that's about as far as a coin show can get from me, but I wish you great luck at the show!
One pointer I can give: Be sure to bring your own lighting source!
Most shows can be too dimly lit for good cherrypicking. A lighted loupe, pen-light or 6 bulb led (tiny) flashlight along with a regular loupe that you are comfortable with, are invaluable tools to have. Pace yourself! A full day of searching at a busy show can be quite fatiguing on the eyes! Good luck no matter what, and I bet you kick butt! There is nothing like seeing so many coins in hand! Way better than deciphering crappy eBay pictures!
6 years plus I made this show a couple of times. I usually walk the show once and then return with a plan on what I am buying. A way to take notes is good via paper , phone, etc. Do not bring a Red Book tucked under your arm...you will be identified as open game. And do not hesitate to ask if "thats your best price”. Keep your game face will picking and do not say what your looking for, turn the coin over as if your just looking and not looking at just the mint mark. And most of all HAVE FUN!
Well I had a great time at my first show, but it was nothing like I expected. I had about 3 hours and $80-$100 to spend, so I kind of expected to cruise around and look at a lot of different types of coins, most of which I wouldn't be able to afford. Maybe I would be able to upgrade some of my common date wheats, and just maybe I'd notice a variety to cherry pick. I didn't expect to afford any of my set needs ('09-S, '09-S VDB, & '14-D), because I don't want AG3 coins, and it's still hard for me to spend over $100 for a cent. I started going around the perimeter and made it past about 10-12 tables. I stopped at the next table and the dealer asked me what I collected, and of course I said Lincolns. He said, "That's what I specialize in. What do you need?" I told him I couldn't afford what I needed. Long story short, he showed me a couple of cheaper '09-S coins he had for sale. He had a problem free AG3-G4 for $60 and a F details (corrosion & a light scratch) for $75, both raw. I actually liked the details coin, but told him I'd think about it & if he had it later I might get it. He asked if I needed to upgrade my '40s & 50's. He had a box of each, mostly BU, in order by date & MM, and I could get most for $2 apiece. He said, "If you would like, you can pull up a chair and look through and pick out what you like. Take all the time you need." I sat there until time to leave. I searched the main variety dates in the '40s & '50's, and even searched the earlier, circulated dates. The 2 dealers chatted with my wife and I the whole time and never rushed me. Thank you Rob Catron of Coins make Cents!
Anyway, I ended up finding an 1953S-1MM-004 and one of my dream list coins, 1944D-1OM-002 (D/S)! I got both for $2 apiece! Rob knew I was cherry picking and when I started to pay he asked what I thought I had found. I was hesitant to say, and it must have showed. He said, "Maybe I can confirm it for you. I told him what I thought I had found, he looked at the and said, "Yes, the '53 is an S/S and the '44 is a D/S. How does $2 apiece sound." I went ahead and bought the '09-S for $75. One of the best times I've had for $79!! Look for threads of the two varieties soon. Thanks all!
