That's almost how I found my current bank, Ken. My previous bank of 24 years didn't move, but they got bigger, replaced all of the long term employees, and got rid of their coin counter because it wasn't profitable...so I just started asking friends about their banks and ended up where I am today...and I drove past it for 20 years...just didn't look like much of a bank....lol

Called Publix, they do not have access to their counter. Then called another branch of my bank that is closer than my home branch and the Manager said "oh we have plenty of pennies, how many do you want" tada!!!! I didn't want to ask for a crazy amount, so I asked for 4 boxes. He put me on hold to check with the vault teller and came back with a "YES". He asked me to call them 15 minutes before I get there to make sure the vault teller is not at lunch or something and give them time to get them from the vault. Hope this one pans out to be a good source!!!

The branch manager was very nice when I told him about my Lincoln Cent addiction LOL Just kidding But we did talk for awhile on the phone and he seemed genuinely interested. I asked him if the banks have to pay the Federal Reserve or Brinks for shipping on their coins and he said yes, but the amount was minimal and they are a large enough branch to not have to be concerned with that.

Good for you Vivien!! Your people skills are so good that you shouldn't have any problem building relationships with banks or any business that is a source for pennies!! Also, isn't Publix a grocery store and if so are the coins they have from a bank or from their customers? Thanks, Larry

Thank you Larry J! It is a job to build relationships in a new area and I just moved here last October.

Yes, Publix is a grocery store but it is Roller's bank, they call him to come pick up their excess bags from their coin counter. When I asked the Publix Manager she said that some stores (I guess larger ones) are able to pull bags from their counter when it gets full, but they are not set up to do that. I do not shop at Publix so I have not seen their counter.

Roller, does your store have a coin counter for the public to use that is not coinstar or does your Publix have a counter in their back office?

Yes, it has a coin machine. It all depends on the people working the store, I suppose. I remember going into one store passing through Port St. Lucy (I'm in Miami) and asking for a bag. They said they had two and asked no questions but sold them to me on the spot. Then I have tried getting them from several of the other Publix stores in my area and they say they can't do it. My store calls me whenever there is a full bag (yesterday they had three, but that's pretty unusual). I actually save them money. They don't have to pay Brinks to re-count and roll them. So it's a symbiotic relationship.

Thanks Roller! Those symbiotic relationships are good ones to have and not easy to find! Funny how every place is different.

Mission accomplished today, I am looking at 4 bricks sitting on the floor!!! Mixed dates, feel pretty sure there's no 17's included, but I am relieved!!! Thank you all for your comments and helpful tips!!!

Did you say in one post recently you sort copper from zinc by a separator or hand?
My local Publix didn't have rolls to give me when I asked for the first time last weekend (The machine is accessible to the public but the employees don't empty it.)

All the stores here have coinstars so I always assumed that someone empties it other than the store.

I wondered about that GrumpyEd. I think the coin counter Roller is describing is not coinstar. I would think there are coinstar people who empty their own counters, but not sure how that works.
