    1983 d weight question

I have found in my collection a 1983 d that weights 2.87 grams. I have weighted several hundred lincolns of this same year and all others are in the 2.48 to 2.59 gr. range. I'll try to post pictures soon I hope

copper will weigh 3.11 grams, I am not sure what the variance should be for zinc. I think that will probably be in the range though.

I know copper is 3.1 and zinc at 2.5gr. but this is the oddest I came across

Pretty good pics... In mid 1982 the mints switched from a solid mix on the lincolns to a copper plate zinc planchet... The solids are 3.1 grams and the plated are 2.5 grams... Here is some more info on the coin make up and such https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/t.../subchapter-II 2.87 grams is a little on the heavy side but yours appears to be a plated cent... I see numerous plating (Gas) bubbles obv and rev and areas around the devices where the plating has been disturbed... The plating on the WNW side of Abes head looks rippled pretty good!!!

If this is a copper-plated zinc planchet (and not a solid copper-alloy planchet), its excessive weight could be due to the zinc core being punched out of rolled-thick stock or it could represent a normal-weight zinc planchet with an abnormally thick layer of copper plating. I recall a proof zinker that weighed 3.5 grams.
