    there's a solid line next to all of the letters

            We always say machine doubling is into (or takes away) from the normal design.

            Look at the vertical bar of E in your top photo.
            Where it has the MD at the top, the normal vertical bar gets narrower. The MD made a shelf into the normal part.

            A doubled die doesn't take from the normal parts, it's something extra along with the normal design.
