    Cleaning Coins

Easy question. What do you all use to clean your coins? I used to use Naptha and a q-tip but I am having trouble finding any.

I mean for removing the crud from some Lincolns without damaging them.

Depends on the nature of the crud. I will soak in Verdi care if it is likely to soften the material or acetone if it is likely that it will dissolve. In either case I follow with some light agitation (plastic toothpick, q tip, etc.)if needed and most times several cycles in a sonic cleaner (no cleaning solution, just hot water).

I was getting bad about leaving my coins in acetone too long until the acetone evaporated (I know, that's terrible to admit) but it messed up a few so now... I just do a quick 15-20 min acetone soak and then if they still look yucky they get dropped in some mineral oil for a few days... week... I don't trust myself with a toothpick or Q tip

I also use a light wipe with a qtip with 99 percent rubbing alcohol, It removes light oils and evaporates cleanly very fast. Does not mess with the toning if you do not scrub with the cotton, only lift the oils floating above the solvent. Much like prepping for fine painted finishes.
Even a fool can look wise if he keeps his mouth closed.

I don't clean them unless they're really cool varieties with something easily removed.

Viv, be careful of leaving that stuff around. If a smoker like me, it can be like Wills Avatar, a fire hazard!

I agree Roger, nothing is best. Especially if it is potentially a "big one" so if you are ever unsure... don't do anything to the coin!

I was wondering when this "method" would be mentioned, as this is the stance taken by most hard core aficionados.
I have a friend who is a CONECA Rep who is ok to see white residue and even gunk on his if need be. It tells him it is original and NOT messed with. Don't get me wrong, he likes a nice looking original early die state uncirculated coin, but really appreciates the history of a well preserved and protected variety as well.
