    Mint Mark Question

Hey friends. At what point where mint marks stamped separate from the date? Reason I asked is I found this 1970 S Large Date today. At first I instantly said Mding or DDDing
but then I got thinking maybe the mint mark was stamped seperate.
I see what appears to be Mding on the north side of the date. I also then see something simular on the mint mark.
    Thanks for looking20171024_160005.jpg20171024_160038.jpg

The MMs were hand stamped thru 1989... Yours looks to be MD on the MM and date... It is flat and shelf like... I do find what looks like a line below the central curve interesting... Not sure what that is but it appears to have the same general shape as the curve???

Ok, however if it is hand stamped what causes the mding? I agree that looks like what it is and I thought that at first as well.

MD is caused by the die jumping when the planchet is struck!!!

I am reading your post and think there's some confusion. The mint mark is hand stamped onto the die, not the coin. Also, the date isn't stamped onto the die.

OH! I understand now. So the dies are stamped with the mint mark and dates by hand and then the dies stamp the coins. Guys I'm sorry if this was trivial. I was totally confused. Thats how MDing can occur on the mint mark even though it was hand stamped. Not into the coin but the die?? Then the coin is stamped.
            Do I understand now??
I felt confident it looked like MDing when I first looked at it but didn't understand how that was possible? SILLY ME

So the dies are stamped with the mint mark and dates by hand
In 1970 only the mintmark was punched by hand with a punch into the working die, not the date.
