So I convinced my CU to sell me a $50 bag from the coin counter after asking to buy a brick and being denied. The usual response from the brick request is the look of "Why do you want so many?" and the nervous smirk. They talk about not having a lot of stock, shipping costs, etc. I have the premium accounts, which help the CU's bottom line. They call me an "owner" and a "member," but treat me as though I am asking for a lot of extra work and grief when I ask for coin. Dagnabbit! I just want some basic thing when they're not busy. I should be able to get what I want. I am very polite--always. I think getting the $50 bag is a fairly good bet, but others might be dumping what has been already searched. Then again, you have to be a member to dump coin in their counter, and since there are a relatively small group of LC hunters, there could be a lot of unsearched coins in a bag of 5,000. What have others done to get coin, specifically with reluctant tellers, branch managers, et al? Any comments on getting coin-counter bags as opposed to other (dwindling) ways? Specifically, I'd like to know of any good finds with that strategy. I already know the pitfalls of others dumping that which has been searched.

I used to get $50 bags from a local Publix coin counter. That has, sadly, come to an end recently. However, I see no difference in finds between bags and bricks in the long run. I get bricks or customer rolled coins pretty much at will from my banks without resistance. Don't put up with their reluctance and insist, though politely. -
Thanks, Roller. I don't think my CU will take back customer-wrapped rolls because they can't see what's in them. I've heard of people doing that, but it makes sense for the institution to have THAT policy. Awaiting my call for the two-brick bag...Comment

My bank has gotten use to me stopping in, with a laugh that the crazy cent guy is here. I exchange a box for a box so their commercial accounts don't suffer or the upper management doesn't get upset because of an overage or shortage of cents.Even a fool can look wise if he keeps his mouth closed.Comment

What I don't get is how they are able to verify, without running the coins through a counter, that there is $25 in that box, or $0.50 in that roll, given that weight alone does not verify amount of coins with the 2.5 g vs. 3.1 g variance in post-'82s vs. pre-'82s. I wouldn't automatically accept one cent less on the exchange if I operated the bank. Don't tell me they run them through the counter while you wait...or do they?Comment

It amazes me that this "attitude" when it should be about "customer service" at banks has been around since the day I bought rolls back in the 1960's !!

So you can't re-roll them and take them back to exchange for another brick to not deplete their stock? (I put a tiny black dot on the wrapper of the ones I roll and exchange so I know if I get any of those back) Geez, they are not giving you many other options! My bank has two branches nearby, one is small and sometimes they do not have enough stock to give me a brick. The other branch is larger, serves more customers, is right next to the shopping mall... they always have bricks and are always nice about it. The smaller branch is nice about it, they just don't have enough sometimes.Last edited by VAB2013; 03-08-2018, 03:24 PM.Comment

The don't "verify" they just take them. A few cents either way do not make any difference. I get some rolls that are obviously over 50 and some that are under. I also ge ones that have dimes in them mixed with cents, occasionally. It all evens out in the end. What I don't get is how they are able to verify, without running the coins through a counter, that there is $25 in that box, or $0.50 in that roll, given that weight alone does not verify amount of coins with the 2.5 g vs. 3.1 g variance in post-'82s vs. pre-'82s. My bank has "Trust" in me, I have been with them for 27 years and they hold a fair potion of my cash assets as well as a mortgage with them. I get premium service with the amount of business I do with them. They hold old looking tolls for me and ask if I want their new rolls before they send them out. It is an odd relationship I guess.Even a fool can look wise if he keeps his mouth closed.Comment

Not to justify a bank's stance to not take exchanges but, one reason my bank gave me to deny taking my coins was that the sorter was broken and there is only one technician serving the western Washington area [for the company that serves them].
She took my number and said she would call me when it had been fixed -- About two weeks later sure enough she called me to let me know it was fixed.Comment
