Thanks for the follow up images.
These do appear to be re-plated from all I've read about "steelies" being re-plated. As I understand it they were plated before being punched out of the sheets so little striations should be visible along the edges. (It must be true if it's on the internet, right?)
Still a nice find and definitely has value.

Another tell tale is if the cheeks or ears are slightly worn but that's hard to see since steel didn't wear fast. My guess is they are re-plated because of the shiny finish and fully plated edges but not 100% sure by the pics.

Still a very cool find in the wild.
I thought the plating was after punch and upset mill like the frankenzincs???

The 43s were done different, they plated the strips then punched them so the edges only have smeared plating from what moved there when punched. Over time they start to show a red rust line on the edge.

                Still a cool find.

I always give away plated ones, like to kids or new collectors. They like them even more because they're bright and pretty and still are a neat way to get people interested.

You can still buy the webbing in pieces on ebay, the strips with holes in it, sorta cool but costs a lot. Apparently someone bought it as scrap and pieces have been on the market for decades.
