Hello: I discovered what I think might be a possible 1999 Wide AM. Can I please get an opinion on this one? You might want to right click on the image and open in another tab for clarity. Thanks very much!
PS: Ignore the black spot, it's something on the magnifier that I've got to fix.
Afraid there is not enough separation between the A and the M on this one. Here is a link from lincolncentresource with photos. Your coin is showing separation probably from die wear. Also look at the FG, WAM's have the FG almost touching the Memorial. Keep diggin though, this would be a great one to find!
When they polish the dies it makes the close AMs have a little gap but it's still a close AM.
Like Viv said, the wide AM has the FG close, the close AM has the FG far so you can verify it that way.
Normal close AM... Try to remember this way Close AM = AM E and Wide A M = A M E The AM may not always be touching due to die wear or polishing but in relation to the distance between the letters on a Close AM - the M is always closer to the A than the E and on the Wide A M - the M is nearly centered between the A and E...
Jim (A.K.A. Elmer Fudd) Be verwy verwy quiet... I'm hunting coins!!! Good Hunting!!!
The FG initials are an important secondary diagnostic. The the wide AM the FG is very close to the memorial building as compared to the close AM type. I remember using this:
get you a 1995 D cent and a 1995 S proof cent.
Compare your cent to the 2 other cents.
You will see the difference between the Wide AM (1995 S) and the Close AM (1995 D) design.
Look at TAT of STATES, the AME of AMERICA, the R of AMERICA, the G of FG, the distance of the FG from the building.
There are other small differences, but these will help you tell right away.
Good Luck looking.
John
I posted a 99 WAM that I found yesterday over the in the Variety Attributions thread. Not to plug my own thread or anything, but you can check out what one plucked from the wild looks like.
