    1974 Aluminum Cent - picture

Just got back from a trip to Washington DC and thought I'd share a picture of the Smithsonian's 1974 Aluminum cent.

More info on the cent can be found here and here. I love the story of the police officer who found one on the Rayburn Office floor and was told to keep it!

Too bad the 1913 Liberty Nickel and the 1933 double eagle were withdrawn from the exhibit when I visited.

Hope pictures posts next time. But I've been there also but don't recall the aluminum cent. Welcome to the forum.

thanks for the information - i never knew at that time the mint was trying something different.

all i knew at the time in 1973 when i was 9 years old that alot stores didn't have enough pennies at times to make change. some offered stamps as change. I think that some banks and stores were offering a few cents more per roll if you turned in your pennies. because i had a big jar full at the time and was thinking of doing just that. i guess i never got around to it. the jar is still in the same place way back then.

Thanks for the welcome. Actually, I've posted to the forum before but it's been a few months...

Funny thing about the 1974 cent-- they had it on equal footing in the display with a common 1943 Steel and a common 1984 Zinc cent. The theme was about alternative metals for cents.

BTW, the Smithsonian also had a 1796 Silver Dollar, three 1804 dollars (Type I, Type II, and Type III), a unique Proof 1854-S Double-Eagle, and an Ultra High Relief 1907 Double Eagle. Sadly, most of the coins were not well-maintained or protected.

                      Regards,

                      Johnny
