    Latest Coin Roll Hunting

On Friday I picked up a box of pennies from my big box bank location. All rolls were heavily circulated. A lot of corrosion and zinc rot. But also a lot of copper coins.
Before I post the stats I did find three pennies to add to my collection. One Bahamian penny with a starfish on the reverse, very cool coin for an old salt to put on his desk. One red 1974 D with great detail and a counter stamp of the state of Alaska and AK stamped in the middle of the state. Very cool because I have been to Alaska before. And a 1992 toner. Pink and purple with copper highlights, stunning to turn in the light.

    Stats:

    490 total coppers (19%)
215 coppers to date sort later (8.6%)
193 coppers damaged and into the bullion bag (7.7%)
66 copper non bullion dates to check for errors (2.6%)
    9 wheat pennies
    6 Canadian coppers
    1 Bahamian copper

Nice % for coppers. My local rolls have been running only 6%-16%.
(And thank you because I thought I was the only one crazy enough to be tracking the Cu% )

Very nice breakdown of your searches. I like your keepers also. In keeping all this data, you will be surprised how things will change (for the good or bad) in subsequent searches. As mentioned, that is a great ratio for coppers. Keep up the great work and keep us informed on your next search!

Looks like you got a good box of cents to search! Just have to ask... that 92, is it a close AM?

Nice group of coins... At least they weren't all frankenzincs... Vivien mentioned the 92 close AM... The mint used a rev design intended for 1993 lincolns on some 92s... Here is some info on rev design varieties from Variety Vista (VV) - http://varietyvista.com/01b%20LC%20D...0Varieties.htm RDV-006 was 1992 and RDV-007 was intended to start in 93!!!

Pete - the numbers define different thoughts and beliefs. Such as I think I can make a small profit from selling copper bullion in the near future. I think I can make a little more profit in the intermediate future if I sell year sorted rolls that have no corroded coins. In the distant future I can make a good profit on UNC zincs. All the while keeping the best pennies for my own collection. Any profit really isn’t a profit as it goes to hidden costs such as supplies and transportation. And as I collect data I can track which banks provide certain types of coins. This lets me save time by going to the branch that has what I am looking for.

Vivien - you know I didn’t even check. I love toners and was stoked to find it. I’ll have to examine it later.

JF - thanks for the resource.

Thanks Emo for the follow up.
This line of thinking is a great way to off set some expenses of collecting.
(if you don't suffer from separation anxiety when they sell!!)

Box two of this week was a 21.68% copper box. It was an unsealed box of all customer wrapped rolls. So great on the copper side but had to be the dirtiest box ever hunted . I am gonna think on it and start a new thread to capture the yuck involved in that box.

You didn't mention zinc's at all but did mention searching coppers later.

Just curious if this mean you search zinc on the first pass?
Were there any interesting zinc errors or varieties in the brick or do you just search and save 95% copper?

I search all. Here is my process that lets me get through the rolls fastest. I heparate into four piles: Post 82 damaged, post 82 "searchable", pre 82 "searchable", and pre 82 damaged bullion. All my wheats go into searchable unless it really has lost it's numismatic value.I woll the dagamed zincs and bag the bullion. Then I go through my post 82 pile then my pre 82 pile. This seems to allow me to process them quickly. Oh yeah, fifth pile for stuff I want in my collection such as cool foreigns and nice toners. I really liked toned pennies.

That's unusual to find so much yuck in customer wrapped rolls... unless maybe they came from an Alabama resident's car cup holder, floor board and between the seats!

I still search the yuck for varieties and errors because a yucky first find can be upgraded later sometimes that yuck will look better after a little acetone soak...

I won't mess with any corroded coins. If it is a corroded copper it goes directly to bullion. If it is corroded zinc then it goes directly to circulation. By corrosion I mean rot, holes, and growth. I am totally of with a black penny with copper highlights.
