Hi Everyone, I am new to the site. I am also new to the world of coins. Can someone tell me what the 1958 error is? I know they are extremly rare. I happen to have one that does not look like the other's that I have. It has a smaller w which is raised in the word (WE) Any help would be appreciated
This is a wonderful, informational forum. Congrats on the picture post, it took me a long time to get a good pic. There is a photography thread in the new user section which has techniques, types of equipment used, lighting and such. There are also groups of 50 and 100 most desired Doubled Dies, Repunched Mint Marks, and such in another section. If you do not find the answer there, or get feedback from an expert here, you can also go off-site to Coppercoins, which has thousands of pics to compare your coin to. The detail of your picture is paramount in attributing your coin. I believe there is a valuable 1958, and a more detailed picture in your post would assist us in what we can discover about it from the picture itself. Good luck in this hobby, you have joined right smack-dab in the middle of one of the best years to start collecting Lincolns since 1909. We await your next picture and post, and one of the many attributers Like Billy Crawford, John Wexler, Brad, and the many, many from Coppercoins will answer as soon as we get a good picture. Finally, attribution is a snap if you want to mail it into one of the recognized attributers whose guidelines can be found on their respective sites, as well as here in some cases. Good luck, and happy hunting! Welcome.
Hi Schaf, I took your picture and inverted the color on photoshop to the area in question, what happened here is a shift of the letter W to the north, how this happens I can not tell you, could be a number of factors.
The main error on the 1958 cent is a double die, which this coin is not, I added a picture of the word we with lines to show the shift, and if you look at the coin again under magnification you'll see that the W is closer to the rim than the rest of the letters in the motto. Hope this helps.
Thanks, I also just sharpened the blur and magnified it. I am coming up with background images on the E&R of Liberty, but I am sure my eyes see what they want to see
