    1982 P Die Cracks

    Hi:
I found this coin showing 3 interesting die cracks. All 3 are on the reverse. One of them, I think is unusual (UDC) as it is through the "E" in "ONE" to the rim. The other 2 are usual die cracks from the corners of the memorial to the rim which can be used as die markers, I guess. There is also an interesting bump in the obverse in between the words IN and GOD in the motto. It may be a die gouge smoothed over by die polishing and abrasion, not by circulation wear as the coin is in good shape, conserving most of the original red. I applied tooth pick pressure to that bump and it remained the same; but I'm not sure if it is a die gouge or something else???. It will be interesting to know as it could be used as an additional marker, besides the 2 usual cracks mentioned above. I submitted this coin to JC, in case it can be listed.
    Thanks,
    Adrian

JC replied, they are all considered usual die cracks for the LCM. Will not be listed.

Thank you for the follow up from JC! Not sure what that is between IN and GOD but I do see the raised area you are talking about. What is the weight of this 82? If it's not copper then it could be a plating blister and some plating blisters will not deflate.

All die cracks on a die are markers for coins struck by that die. As you look at more Lincoln's you will start seeing more of these same types of die cracks like the ones you have pictured, they are very common ones. Some of the more unusual die cracks would be rim to rim die cracks or almost rim to rim, or something like the ones JC has listed in the Unusual Die Cracks section of cuds-on-coins that go through Lincoln's jacket, etc.

Thanks for the info Viv!! Sorry, I forgot to mention it is a 1982 zinc coin and weights 2.5g, reason why I tried to destroy the "blister"; but as you said that might not be a definitive assay as some may not brake...

Here are additional pics, for a better look.

There is also split plating by the 2 in the date. That's all I can see in this coin.

        Thanks again,

You're welcome Adrian! I'm thinking like you are that it's probably a plating blister and it just won't deflate. It seems to have that bubble look to it. The guys can give us more feedback on this, but I think when it's a die gouge or some type of die damage, the edges are usually defined and more sharp looking instead of the bubble look from plating disturbances.

That's very convincing Viv!! Die Gouges from what I have seen are also more rounded in the largest axis than what this anomaly looks like... I don't want to damage the coin trying to find out if it is a blister or not, as it looks like it is and it is not a very relevant feature, I think??. On the other hand, I also think the coin is in pretty good shape for the year it is.
