Possible doubled column/doorway and other anomalies I need help with.

I started with what looked like a doubled column/doorway and found other anomalies. Let me know what you think.

    Thanks for looking, Jon.

Interesting find Jon! If the anomaly in Bay 7 is raised, it looks like it could be a doubled column. To me it looks like the west Memorial base is incuse, so I would think PSD. The anomaly at the steps, I can't tell if it's raised or incuse but it doesn't match a die clash, Lincoln's ear would be in that area and the anomaly looks straight to me. What bugs me is the anomalies are similar in size and width which makes me wonder if all of them are PSD related. I hope you have a doubled column though!

Thanks for checking it out Viv!! After looking at it a few times, I'm inclined to agree with your thoughts on the one at the end of the memorial and the one on the stairs. I think the reason they got my attention was like you mentioned, they are similar in size and the look. I do feel the one in bay 7 is different though and raised. I checked all for possible blisters and they are not.

Thank you for the follow up Jon! I compared your doubled column to several of the ones listed on coppercoins, and I think you have a very good chance on this one!

Seems like I seldom have good news for you Jon, but I am inclined to believe this is all damage to the die. I had to have a little giggle at your terminology though. I didn't know what you were referring to as a 'door'. (only messing with you). I think all of the anomalies are gouges. In addition, the one on the steps has to be pretty deep to show up like that. Is it possible this one is actually PSD instead of a gouge of some sort?

I'm embarrassed to say that I haven't been to DC since I was a little kid and for some reason thought it was like a door opening at the top of the steps beyond the columns. You made me look up some pics just to see what it did look like, seems to just be an opening and that's what you see just inside of columns 5 and 8. I would say you are correct as always Bob!! Thank you for taking a look at it. Here's a link to a decent closeup of that area. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincol...side_EDIT.jpeg)

That would have gotten my attention also... I'm in with the die damage... Didn't Mike Diamond do an article, in Coin World, a few months ago about the die damage on steps because of how deep it was in the die???

Jim, I think this is the thread you are referring to http://www.lincolncentforum.com/foru...hlight=diamond

Also, a few years ago I saw a drawing or picture of the Lincoln Memorial and all of the different parts of the exterior were named. Like the frieze, cornice... some words I had never heard before. I tried to find it last night on the forum, and the web.

Cool link to the Memorial Jon! I didn't realize the same architect designed it similar to the Parthenon, there's a Parthenon replica in Nashville, it's massive to see. But, I've never been to DC so you're one up on me. Sorry this one didn't turn out to be a doubled column, but I think you will find one eventually... you're good at this

Thanks Viv!! The cornice and frieze are just below the perimeter of the roofline but after looking at the opening close up, that is all it is, just an opening. That's cool about the fact is was based on the Parthenon! I didn't realize that the 36 columns stood for the 36 states at the time that were reunited under his presidency.

Thank you Jim, I believe you are right, I think it was BJ and I can't find it either. Wish I had bookmarked it, it was very good information!
