Remember my 1941-D Toned Roll? How about a 40-D?

Three years ago I posted coins from a 41-D roll which had beautiful rainbow toning. Well, here is the first coin from a 40-D roll with similar toning, perhaps a bit darker, but with lots of green, which I really like. Let me know what you all think! I'll post a few more later.

To me...that's a "Wowser"! I personally think this is one of the better toners I have seen. It is beautiful.

Beautiful coin! I'm such a sucker for a nicely toned coin. It really brings out that nice obverse strike too!

Most of the roll looks like this to varying degrees, and maybe half the roll is really, really nice.

Yeah, the coins are well-struck. There are a few different die combos in the roll so will be interesting to study them. I'll post more pics soon.

Strange thing is, when I put together my roll set I never found a 40-D roll that wasn't toned like this (tan/green),
The opposite for 40-P and 40-S they were often pale yellow bright. But those 40-Ds were toned like that through the entire roll not only the end coins, all were toners.

Really strange how different dates and MMs have different characteristics.

Probably no way to tell for sure but I've wondered if it has something to do with higher than normal striking pressures. Similar to proofs being struck with higher pressures and have nice toning.

I would think it's like making a cake from scratch too, same ingredients but a very slight different mix of alloys sometimes. Maybe even the surrounding conditions, temp, humidity and so on. I'm sure there are a lot of factors and no longer than I have been searching, I have noticed the same with many years. I think it's the 73's that have the nice purple hue on a regular basis.

My bet is there were hoards of certain dates/mints by folks. Seems likely that the toned 40-D rolls came from a hoard, which were all stored together in the same conditions. Maybe 73's same way, different guy.

That is a very good point. I forgot about the huge hoards of many different coins out there.
