The main reason it loves to crater the mintmark is because they were punched and had a sharper wall than the rest of the design so it was the first place that the plating split so the zinc rot had an easy start there. You can assume it was a D mint because a P would have no reason to crater there.
Zinc rot for sure... May have had contamination in the plating tank or split plating but corrosion did a number on it... Here is a 1983 D I posted a couple days ago before the MM fell out http://www.lincolncentforum.com/foru...highlight=1983
