What to do with cull Lincoln's?

When I used to re-roll and exchange I would just put a couple of culls in each roll. Now I'm not doing that and I have about 1/2 a brick box full of culls! I asked the bank if they would exchange them and the bank charges for this!

So... I found this US Mint Mutilated Coin Redemption Program website and you have to have at least 1 pound to send them in. Still... doesn't seem right that we have to pay shipping to get them to the Mint! So either way it costs money!

What do you guys do with your culls?

When you take them to the bank, do they keep track of who brought in the rolls? I didn't realize this was an issue. I'm sheltered when it comes to this where the wife works in the vault of a big box store and just puts them back in her stock where they make their way to the registers. I'm really spoiled on the coin exchange!

Jon, I have seen some rolls with customer's name on them and the phone number was there but covered up with a marker. My bank didn't make me do that, they would just exchange the rolls on the spot. Now I just don't have time to sit and roll them up!

The best thing to do is spend them if they look enough like a coin to be accepted. I clean them or oil them if needed and if they are accepted at the auto checkout machine that gets rid of them. The ones that the machine rejects (mostly underweight corroded) I spend but only one or few per transaction. No cashier ever refused a coin from me that they can identify only for being ugly.

I have gotten customer rolls that could make you puke. Mix them in with other acceptable ones and return to the bank. I think the system will cull them in time.

Personally, I don't search that many moderns and the ones I do find I usually spend or drop in a need a penny take a penny tray at a store.

All very good advice! Thanks so much! I very rarely pay with cash... still using the ole' debit card most of the time so maybe I should just take the time to roll up some rolls and sneak them in a little at a time

John... I don't know of any wishing wells around here or I would gladly toss these in for a charity

With about 180 copper plated zincs per pound that adds up and the only winner is the USPS.
I put them right back in the rolls they came from and bring the rolls back to the bank. I figure they will be less apt to balk at selling me Lincolns if it is just an exchange and they don't have to re-roll them.

Thank you Cliff! I think that is the best idea for me too since I don't do a lot of shopping, and when I do I don't carry cash... just swipe n go! I'll just start rolling up a brick and sneak a few in each roll, and exchange them for a fresh brick at the bank! That way it won't cost me anything but time

wish you could see my bank Jim! The hamburger joint is bigger than my bank LOL! Sometimes they don't have any extra pennies LOL LOL! Some of their other branches are normal size banks though and I've had my account with them for several years
