Thanks Derrel!! Yeah, I'm going to work on it for about three more weeks and we'll see what it looks like. Got some corrosion that created pitting but that will be ok.

That's a cool looking woody Jon! It really has character! I'm not familiar with using olive oil, guess it's okay? I have used Mineral Oil with good results getting gunk off. Geez, it was a long time ago when somebody here told me about Mineral Oil... I think maybe it was Stoneman? You can leave it in Mineral Oil for days, weeks, etc.

Thanks Viv!! It was so extreme and unusual, I thought it was PSD at first but Ed walked me through it! I got the idea from something Cliff had mentioned and maybe Roller. Cliff said he would alternate between peroxide and acetate. I think Roller brought up the fact that the acetate hardened the crud which would loosen over time. When I have a coin in really bad condition I will do the acetate pull it out and rinse with water using the sprayer in the sink. I'll then drop it in olive oil for a couple of days to soften the junk again and pull out and do the same. I'll alternate for several times until I get the majority of the gunk off. I just decided that olive oil would be something that would not hurt the coin, not having any active ingredients in it and doing the job of softening the gunk and making more malleable in between using acetone. Seems to work ok.

Aww thank you Jon! So are you... the best! I really enjoy reading your threads and how you take time to help others out! Yeah... I remembered something about olive oil being too acidic and I didn't want to not say anything and have you mess a coin up!

I've had so many arguments about this with self proclaimed "experts" that I could write a book. They'll give you the old "I've been collecting coins since you an itch in your daddy's pants and olive oil will not hurt a coin...." and so forth. I recommend every new member read this sticky by Thad. http://www.lincolncentforum.com/foru...ghlight=xylene
