    1958 D Lincoln

Good Evening: I decided to open up one of the rolls of wheat pennies that I rolled up about 40 years ago, when I was active. Unfortunately they were all 40s and 50s. I did decide to look at the D and S mint marks, and came across this. I can't find anything on the internet and just can't figure out what would have caused it. Any ideas?

Acetone, you mean swab it with acetone?

O.K., the acetone didn't really do anything. Here's the pic.

For a single coin a GLASS shot glass works fine. Drop it it there, seal the top with something, (I usually use aluminum foil wrapping tightly around the top to seal) and pull it out in the morning. Rinse it immediately after pulling out of the acetone and pat dry with a cotton cloth, take a pic and let us see.

O.K., scrubbing with acetone and an old tooth brush just made it a little cleaner. Here's a pic. I'll soak it overnight, like you said, and take another pic in the morning. Thanks

O.K,. soaking in acetone. I didn't have a shot glass, which is kind of amusing since I use to own a bar, so I'm using a wine glass. Think it gives it a touch of elegance. lol
Sorry about the pic, hand holding my plug-able microscope.

Sorry about the scrubbing, but it was an old, well worn toothbrush.

I think most of what it had was staining from some liquid around the details, the thing by the D is either corrosion or something stuck there.

Well Ed, I don't think it's corrosion, cleaning with acetone didn't seem to affect it. could be something stuck there I suppose. It does seem to have a little depth on the bottom of it. Seems to be in the metal itself. Have no idea how that could happen, but then there's a lot I don't know. Soaking now, let see what the morning brings.
                        Thanks: Lou

Acetone only works on certain things, it will not take corrosion off.

You do have a nice RPM though! Looks like splits in the upper and lower serifs.

OK, good morning. I've soaked the coin in acetone as described, and to me it looks the same. Here's the pics (soaked for about 8 hours). Any other suggestions? Maybe I should take it to the local coin shop and ask his opinion.
