That's interesting, the whole bit of it, Maineman. First, that the banks actually are keeping bags of pennies. I have yet to scour now the rest of the banks here. Just out of curiosity now.
My bank doesn't have count machines, but also, it's not like I would short them even 1 penny. Why would I? I have an account there, and I definitely wouldn't go to jail for pennies or for anything. But I have found rolls of pennies missing 2-5, and some also having been rolled with too many pennies, like 53-55. Me, I take my time, count them out by fives till I get 50 on a piece of paper towel, than I put them in the paper roll. No mistakes.
I don't know. Banks around here seem to keep 1 box at best. Only one that I found to actually have more than that.
Now, like my bank, they probably have more, since I returned boxes here, and now seen that others have returned rolls there as well, ...so they are probably swamped with penny rolls. They are all most likely useless' .
But who knows. Unless one gets to travel around, and see what's happening in their area.

I think it's good that you hit several, that way you won't need to overuse any one bank so you can get more rolls without them getting fussy

I agree with everyone here. Your do get some junk customer rolls from time to time but they are the best ones to search. My bank does not give out customer rolls, they send them back to be re-rolled. They do not want to deal with people returning to complain a roll was short or it had foreign coin in it. I convinced the manager to let me take them and she would never see them again. Because I am a long-time customer she knows me well so she agreed. It saves them time because they have to open each roll and dump them into a bag before they get picked up. In the past, I have found solid rolls of wheat pennies as well as many error coins. I have posted a few of them here recently. I also save copper pennies. (Yes I know I'm nuts) I am searching the 78 rolls I got last week. So far, every roll has all copper pennies in them with lots of wheaties. I go to the bank every week at the same time so they have them waiting for me. They also give me a box or two with them. At least once a month I bring them a box of donuts to say thank you. Being nice always helps.

Mark, now we know how you have racked up those million or so "pennies"... it's the donuts! LOL! So true, a little kindness goes a long way but it may not work so well unless you already have a good relationship with your banker. I think it just depends on the bank's coinage demands and financially how well they are able to fulfill their customer's needs. You might find one bank that has lots of extra boxes in their vault and they are happy to get rid of them, and other banks that are struggling to keep up with customer demands. Once you find a good banker like you have now, they probably wonder when you're gonna walk in with the donuts!!!

GrumpyEd ...guess you were correct. Just got an email from the US Mint --": The 2019 proof set is accompanied by a special edition 2019 Lincoln penny with a proof finish struck at the West Point Mint with a “W” mint mark. "

retiredcopper, that is really cool you managed that, and stumbling on those lucky rolls.
I kept the copper coins too ---all the good bad and ugly, separated from what I wanted to keep, and what went into some bags of just copper coins. I think I have about 30lbs now.

Another good way to get your hands on older pennies is to let people know you collect them. Sometimes people have coffee cans and bottles full of them at home but they are too lazy to wrap them. I offer to take them, count them and give them cash. Last year I scored a 5 gallon glass water bottle nearly full of pennies from a guy at my gym. He stopped putting pennies in it in 1982 when he moved into a new house. He put the bottle in his garage and had not touched it since. The count was over 20 thousand, all copper and hundreds of wheat pennies. I paid him face value plus extra for the wheaties. He was thrilled and so was I! When he told other gym members about it, several approached me and asked if I would do the same for them. For awhile, I had so many pennies I could't keep up with them. In the mean time, I will still getting bricks every week from my bank. By the time I finished all the bottles, bags and cans I had from gym members I had over 100 boxes of pennies from my bank stacked up and waiting for me to search them. I still haven't made a dent in that stash.

So I got 2 unselead boxes, and 2 sealed ones. The sealed ones have holes at the top in order to see each roll; both bricks have uncirculated 2018 rolls. Only opened one box and one roll.

Yay! You finally got some boxes! Great if those 2018's are Philly's... not so great if they are Denvers

Thanks, Viv. It may be a while until I get to them. Would be interesting to see if I find one like that, or even something not listed.
Just like this 1982 P Large date copper, haven't found listing of a DDR for it. Unless this coin has mechanical doubling.

You are welcome! Searching bricks of solid date Shield cents can get a little boring but it helps to see a bunch of them side by side so you can compare what looks normal to one that has doubling. What I do is search a few Shield rolls, then take a break from them and search some other mixed rolls. That way you won't get burned out and give your eyes a break from the glare and shine

Good advice. The shields are hard to look at, especially the ones with extreme mirror finishes. Yah, they could make your head spin.
