Advice on value of bulk rolls of wheats by date?

I understand most bulk wheats are worth 3-5 cents each. And at about 150 Wheats per pound that would put them in the $4.50 - $7.50 per pound range. (Depending on a quick assessment of approximate condition & being worn/damaged.

There is a local collector (started in the early 60's) and friend who, as a kid, saved wheats for grade and 1955 DDO. He hasn't counted them but he thinks 1,000- 2,000 rolls? He did roll them by date and we have been talking about them lately.
I have not looked at any of the rolls in person.

He knows most people (ie:relatives) don't see much past the face value for cents. Sometimes even less because of the hassle of taking them to the bank. He didn't seem enthusiastic at the normal rate of $1.50 -$2.50 per roll.

There is extra value for them being sorted by date. And considering he did look for major varieties, I was wondering what others might consider fair for rolls of dated wheats put up in the '60's and '70's? These were saved before the increased popularity for varieties, IMHO, because of the internet.

Thanks for any insight and comments. Cliff

That's a tough call! I get the part about older major varieties have likely been found (leaving all the newer varieties to be found!), but I would lean toward whether the rolls by date are BU or circs. If they are BU, I would pay up to the greensheet prices for BU rolls, like I would at the annual coin shows. The circ rolls I wouldn't be enthused about, maybe at the standard per/roll price. That's just my opinion and style.

      Thanks Kevin.

Only really major varieties were looked for because this was when knowledge was all firsthand and he was young with limited mobility. Studying and learning was at shows, shops and clubs. Not a lot of literature or books.
He pulled them from circulation so I'm thinking R/Bn or brown.

I totally agree! Could be a alot of varieties in those rolls.
At the same time, I've been saving all my 1960-1980 AU/BU pennies I've found for years and putting them in rolls for future sale. I guess I assumed all those 1940-1950 BU rolls I've found at coin shows came from somewhat similar accumulation methods. Maybe your coin dealer friend has some real beauties in those rolls?

Some dealers have buy prices for circ wheat rolls by date. Nothing gets great until the older stuff.

For modern's/memorials, the dates with varieties deserve some premium for searching. It's all tough to price other than putting them for sale and seeing what you get

So it might need to be broken into pre- 1930 rolls and intriguing dated wheat (36, 41, 42, 43) rolls bringing more? Probably not many D or S being in Fl.

I'm just trying to gauge how much of a premium without going overboard.
I have one copy of grey sheets from last year, but there are only BU rolls.

            Thanks again for any help.

                Thanks Ed.
I'll look and I reaaaalllly appreciate the link since I tend to buy rolls from a collectors view point and end paying too much.

Cliff: I saved about two dozen rolls of wheaties back in the 70's. Stuff from the 30's and back were pretty beat up. Is there any chance he would sell you, say, half a dozen rolls for maybe $4.00 or so, picked at random? That might give you and idea of what they look like without a big investment. Just me thinking out loud.

                    Thanks for the suggestion Lou.

I was thinking along those same lines of seeing if he wanted to part with some. If they hold an emotional attachment to them this might be a way to break the ice and see how they are.
