A mason jar stores and seals really good... The vapor from acetone is no more flammable than rubbing alcohol vapors... Do not keep the acetone in a plastic container for extended periods (unless in the form of nail polish remover)... What is considered pure acetone will slowly break down plastic unless it is made specifically for acetone... I wouldn't smoke when working with acetone you could loose eye brows If possible open a window and use a fan to blow fresh air in... Acetone vapors will get you loopy in higher concentrations... As for storage make sure the lid is secured properly and you can store it safely under your bathroom sink... If you are really uncomfortable with using/storing acetone you may want to consider using verdi-care... Verdi-care can remove a lot of different substances from a coin plus it protects the coin... Hope that helps a bit!!!

JF...lol...this acetone thread, I bet it's making a lot of people laugh!
But, am getting a bit more used to it --- the can is sitting in the bathtub, as far away from me as possible (don't laugh). My place here is a rectangular 12x15. That's it. I had the can in the 'kitchen area' under a chair, but figured I didn't want to keep it there while am cooking. So it went in the bathroom. The kitchen' is about 5ft from where am sitting by the computer, and where I smoke; 2 ft to my left is the only window, which I keep open all the time when I am at home.

So, the plastic bottle I just used as an intermediary between the can and the shot glass in which to put the penny. I used a small round ashtray before, but found a tiny shot glass the perfect size. To pour from the can itself is asking for spills.
I'll have to buy a mason jar (I assume you leave the rubber seal on)
In the meantime, I rummaged around and got a small horseradish jar to be the intermediary.

JF, thanks for all the tips. I'll try to keep my eyebrows the way they are! lol

I think acetone is more flammable than rubbing alcohol plus rubbing alcohol 70-92% so it is not pure.

I would use it in the big room with the window open and not smoke or spark anything until it's sealed in a jar and had time for fumes to vent.

It made me think of the ghost ship Mary Celeste full of alcohol vapors (supposedly) and creating such a lasting mystery.

GrumpyEd, laughing @ 'the big room'. Yah, it is just one big 'room', space; bathroom to the side. Thanks, that's what I do now. I open the intermediary jar, pour a little in the shot glass with the penny; close the top of the jar, and cover both with aluminum foil, and in a plastic bag, and off to the bathroom counter and away from my immediate area. The acetone can itself is undisturbed. Thing is, I will just reserve a time when to do this, like late at night, if I will have a few coins. Do it, done. And I won't die not smoking during that time.

(looking up the Mary Celeste ship story); never heard of it.

You are correct on the isopropyl rubbing alcohol... I had it mixed up with the ether alcohol which is also available along with the isopropyl alcohol over the coiunter... Flash point of Ether is -49 F https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/diethyl_ether Acetone is 0 F https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/acetone and Isopropyl Alcohol is 53 F https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/isopropanol ... I was unable to find the data for the Ether Alcohol compound but it should have a flash point near that of acetone or slightly higher... Hope that clears up any confusion!!!
