SF MMS-004 same as SF MMS-009!

Great news! Ray and I have presented our research to Dr. Wiles, and after review, he has agreed to alter his Mint mark style listings to coincide with our findings that SF Mint mark style #4 is the same as SF Mint mark style #9. I will be writing this up and submitting it to Coin World.

        Awesome Will!

The mystery is why on earth they re-used it!

This is awesome news Will! Congrats for unraveling another Lincoln cent history mystery! I can't wait to hear more about this and see Ray's awesome photos! It is also great to have Dr. Wiles on board with your findings!

Ed... I wonder if the mint was having a hard time with these S mint mark punches not lasting and the MMS-004 held up better than the 005 through 008. The 005 through 008, the S was much thinner compared to the chunky looking MMS-004. It looks like in 1974 the MMS-008 didn't make it through the year so they brought the MMS-009 (actually the MMS-004) back.

The odd thing is that it was still there after so long.

Yeah, it is fun to imagine what may have happened. Mms8 broke or went missing and they were stuck until the custodian said, "Hey, there is one of those over here in the broom closet. " lol.

Were you able to verify thru the mint that they did in fact reuse the punch???
