    1937-pressed penny -10 commandments

So I went to work today, computer project for K12. On the way back, although I passed by it before on my way home this month, there was this Circle Antiques (as the road went in a circle toward a different road). I thought I would stop.
The building wasn't that tall or big looking, but inside seemed 'endless', with many rooms roaming left and right. Lots of novelties, and tools, and toys, glass cases with tin cases and many more. In one, I found this 1937 penny with the 10 commandments on the back. I've seen an elongated penny before from this machine when I perused through Calico, Ca. (btw---the Rainbow Basin, I could see it in the horizon, while sitting on the pallet --that provided as a step to the workshop, to the NE of where I lived. I had a few of those, but no more.

I was happy to find this one.

And also found in another case, a whole bunch of envelope looking things. So I went back to the counter, and asked them to open it. They were commemorative uncirculated coins of different years. I bought them all, 8$ each. Going through them now and tomorrow. Glad I stopped. Interesting.

That's really cool Camelia! A lot of words to get on an elongated cent! I've seen elongated cents before but not this one - glad you stopped too!

Out of all days. I've been traveling back and forth, different days of this month (the job ends May 1, on Wednesday). The clerk, she said the vendor who had the penny just brought that in this week. And they are only open Fri-Sun. Same with the sets. Hah. Go figure. The rays must have aligned through the clouds. Or maybe, I think it was JF's saying on the 1949 post (to play the lottery ---humm, which I actually did) that prompted me to stop.

That one is neat, I like the rim pattern and that the obv details all show.

Never know what to expect when exploring those shops

Nice bunch of mint sets and even a souvenir dollar! I didn't even know they sold dollar sovs as singles, most are like a mint set.
The sov sets that are best to find are probably 82 and 83, those years had no mint sets so the closest thing are sov sets and the coins like the quarters from them are worth a lot like $30 each. There aren't many sov sets around, I guess you had to tour the mint or visit their gift shop to get them.

I didn't know either, Grumpy. Hopefully, more to find. I feel am on a good streak of something.
              (hopefully, I don't slide, lol)

Grumpy, so I just opened the 1980 souvenir set. It's 3- SBA coins. On the obv. it seems like the 2nd coin has a nice S. And on the reverse, I was looking for the talons (from what I've been reading on them). The 3rd coin looks good.
It's late night and the lighting is not the best, and they are sealed in a cellophane thin material.

                  That is neat.

                  It's got all 3.

Makes me wonder where they put the sov sets together since they contained all the mints.

They did circulate the S dollars that year, maybe they hadn't figured out that nobody wanted them and were cranking them out at all the mints. Later, they had buildings storing them for decades since the public hated them because they look too much like quarters. They were only poular on toll roads as payment. They still didn't learn from it and made the Sacs and Presi dollars. Later they were so desperate to get rid of the hoard of them that they offered them shipped to anyone that wanted them at face with free shipping (paid by the taxpayers) but the program was abused, people were ordering thousands of them at face with free shipping to get cashback on their credit cards and dumping them back to banks at face to get their money back, it never really got them in use so they stopped the program.

The 79 and 81 both came with 2 different S mintmark types but the 80 only had MMS-002.

Grumpy, thank you for taking the time to write about the 80's sba's history. That is neat. And --> "Makes me wonder where they put the sov sets together since they contained all the mints."

makecents, yah, ya never know what you find. I love vintage things, coins, photography items, stamps, tools, and others. They are something you will never find at Wally World, and the malls, which I barely ever visit. They are history, and when they are rare, well made, and still in great condition, it's an awesome find. If I had the money I'd probably have a small house full with of all kinds of finds; I'd peruse the rooms with an old lantern, and they won't be categorized. Haha, like a movie.

Really cool find. I'm reminded of a video I saw recently, where some guys were metal detecting in the mid-west, could have been in Ohio. They found about a dozen or more of the pennies with the 10 commandments and about an equal number with the lord's prayer on them. It was an old cellar hole in the woods.

That's cool, Lou. Treasure hunting is quite a feat, but stumbling upon it, is even better. Used to go into mines, in the Cali desert. Most unattended, just a piece of wood in the front, no signs. By Trona, too. And way farther, some that had beautiful veins of turquoise; of course, you'd have to mine it. Probably live there day and night to do so.
I guess you'd find non-metallic (pennies) because of the corrosion or metallic materials built on them. How much you can scrounge from that -- I wonder. Maybe if they were like 1800's coins would be a better find.
But cool story to know. Thanks, Lou.

LOL! Those metal detecting and mine exploring videos are addicting. If I start watching the hours pass and I'm hooked
