1942-P High Relief Lincoln Cent Pattern

In the January 2019 "The Numismatist" there is an article describing the subject coin. I shot some of the photos for that article so am consequently very interested in the coin, though I'd be interested anyway since Lincoln Cents are my specialty. A few days ago it was announced that PCGS had certified the coin as a High Relief Pattern, and a thread announcing it was posted on Collector's Universe US Coin Forum, see here: https://forums.collectors.com/discus...5-judd-2081/p1.

In the above thread, there is some controversy over the listing of the coin as High Relief, and indeed one of the folks posting believes it was struck from a regular 1942 die with a few modifications. However, my photos show that the relief of the letters in the motto are indeed quite a bit higher than the relief on a Business Strike or Proof coin. No other measurements were published. I also recently looked back at the full-coin photos I took, and did an overlay with a standard 42P coin. I found several interesting differences, the most obvious of which are some unusual characteristics around the mouth, lower lip, nostril, and nose bridge. These are different enough from any other Lincoln Cent I've seen that it seems clear to me that the die used was specially prepared in more ways than just the obvious rim adjustments. Some of the differences could have been from a modified working hub I believe, though may have been done farther back in the die making process.

Below I will post an animated gif showing the face area of the Pattern and Business Strike coins. I'm not sure how the animation will come out, we'll see. Please let me know what you think...does this look like it was made from a regular 42P Cent die, or was it specially prepared?

Nice images in the article Ray and an interesting comparison. No clue here though.

Ray I have been following the discussion on the other Board and I am in the camp that the Mint was messing around - end of story. But again, not the end of your brilliant photography skills and knowledge. Thanks for posting this here where everyone should take the time to read the discussion.

        Thanks guys.

For everyone reading this, look at the two profiles in the animated gif, and imagine they were two different working hubs. Now imagine they were both used to make a working die. That die would be a Type 3 doubled die because the design is different between these two hubs. Perhaps that changes the perspective of the discussion a bit?

Way over my head, but very interesting nonetheless. And it makes me frightningly aware of just how little I know. Awesome images, Ray! Thanks for starting this thread!

Honestly, from the gif, I thought the normal coin was the one in high relief. I definitely don't know. Cool coin.

It's a bird! It's a plane! Aw nuts... It's merely two die scratches!
